Advice please! Disco TD5 hub bearing shagged on hols

Hopefully someone can offer me some advice as i am starting to loose the plot.

We've driven down to Plymouth from Corby 280 miles ish and we've got a holiday booked at longleat center parks for the week tomorrow (Monday) and driving back up to corby on Friday

This morning while driving around town over the lovely speed bump the 3 amigos flash up and i Didn't think anything of it and continued driving as i presumed it was just having hissy fit. 10 minutes later and my front hub is having an intermittent screaming fit.

I only bought the car 2 weeks ago from an independant land rover garage and it was mentioned in the mot as an advisory saying it had slight play. I asked the seller and he dismissed it as the mot tester was being picky and would have no problems for ages.

I've got the full rac package but i don't want to get recovered all the way to corby with the family as it'll be roller blinds for the holiday and the wife would cut my plums off.

I do have a family car in plymouth i can use for the holiday but do i drop it off and get it fixed at the local main dealer and hope that my local garage picks up the bill? I can't afford to be seriously out of pocket before the holiday has started.

Is there anyone around plymouth that someone can recommend that could help?

Try putting this in LZ International Rescue. Or maybe a mod could?

Moved, if it's wheel bearings I believe it's a new hub that's needed but others will know better.

new hub as you said ,tay100060 approx £60 upwards,play in the wheel should have been the clue new unit type bearings dont have play and if they do they have a very short time left, hubs help on by 4 x 15mm headed bolts plus 32mm cv nut

Brookwells.co.uk is only a couple of miles from where i am and according to their web site they have the parts in stock so getting hold of them shouldn't be too difficult. Getting them fitted is where i may struggle

Done mine with a friend on the side of the road in hour and half. Any competent spanner monkey will do it in no time. Make sure you use timpkin bearings. Don't let it spoil your holiday, garage you got it from should cover the cost ,if not kick off.

cv nut will be tight so big bar and tube needed, cv shaft will need knocking through hub if splines have rusted so brass punch etc and hammer, hub will need knocking of so a good large chisel and lever, abs sensor comes with hub leave it in hub and thread wire through steering knuckle and dont pull cv completely back through till wire is sorted as theres little room,abs sensor wire connects under servo, but not a particularly difficult job

Ian Whitehair is a great guy and a TD5 eggspurt.
Give him a ring in the morning.
Get the RAC to recover you to his place and I'm sure he'll fix it pronto.
Think he charges about £40 an hour.

That would be the ideal solution. if i could get someone to help me fit it tomorrow morning then we can carry with the holidays and everything will be awesome.

I'm pretty sure the garage i got it from will cover the costs, it's just annoying it's happened so quickly after being told it'll be fine and it not happening closer to home so i can vent my frustrating at the guy face to face

Brookwells will have it in stock, unfortunately im off to Manchester for a fortnight at 4 o'clock in the morning and won't be able to help with tools

If you speak to John in brookwells he can give you the number for some guys that will do it locally

cheers trewey, I'll give him a ring first thing in the morning once I've vented at my local garage and made sure they're picking up the cost.

Relatively simple job as James says, but the caliper has to come off first, to get the disc off - 12 sided socket needed (15mm or 17mm not sure).

I have a spair o/s front stubb axle if your splines are tight on, I had too replace my near side front bearing last year and it was welded on tight to the stubb axle and hub so I brought a pair

Update : all sorted, i borrowed mother in laws car and got the parts from brookwells and got a local garage to fit the part. The wheel bearing was completely shagged, once i jacked it up in the morning there was a dangerous amount of play so got the rac to pick the old girl up and now its all sorted and the holiday shall continue.
