My series 3 has an option to place tyre on bonnet . I can see that there are a number of different types of fixings , mine is literally four rubber discs on bonnet ( no indent) and a silver disc with a single column sticking out which appears to have a hole to put a padlock on top and two holes where you literally put two bolts in . I have 2 questions regarding this . Firstly are they literally hub bolts I use and secondly the disk only seems to be held onto bonnet with 10 screws which appear to be coming out for of the underside a of bonnet .

Is this safe ? As you can see the underside of the bonnet doesn't have any holes in it so the tyre would literally be screwed to a metal plate that is held onto bonnet with ten tiny screws

Thanks

Im so glad I used a defender wheel carrier on mine, looks so much simpler than the series arrangement. 3 holes with a holesaw some M5 domed allen bolts and done, only 2 bolts to hold the wheel too, will get some pics on my thread at some point

I would be interested to see those pics, I have one of the defender ones kicking about and was thinking of putting it on my s3.

I also have a spare s3 one but there are so many holes that need drilling to fit it, looks like a major pita.

Also made up a spreader plate in work out of 3mm ali. Defender one is too wide to fit between the frames and is only 1mm thick anyway so didnt bother adapting it, just made a new one

thx for the pix, looks like I shall need a spreader then, I just have the big metal bit you have going thru the bonnet and the round bit and bolts that hold the wheel down

Series 2s often had the wheel carrier fastened to the bonnet with small nuts and bolts if it has been fitted as an extra.

Ok , so I have a final question re this , I have now taken out the crappy screws and riveted the disc to the bonnet , I will make a plate and use 2 bolts to screw down tyre , however , the thread for the bolts only goes into the plate and not the bonnet so is this correct , surely the bolts should go through the bonnet also , all that weight dependant on 9 rivets seems a bit of a push.

Thanks.

I think ill drill through the bonnet and do a nut and bolt job I dont feel happy with it just being held on by 9 flimsy rivets.
