Hya folks,
I am looking to buy a 4x4 in a few weeks. The reason being is that I am moving to a small Greek island and I am intending to drive over there. In the summer the place is hot and dusty and in winter it can get wet and muddy with a bit of snow chucked in for good measure.I am not going off roading or the like, but some of the small tracks can get a little sticky!!We also need 7 seats,air-con, big roof rack and a touch of class as we will be collecting clients from the airport.Obviously this site is a LR site so I expect you all to big up your cars but what I really need is some good advice on models,reliability,re-calls,ease of servicing, comfort.Basically what to look for.Our search has been narrowed down to a Disco,a Land Cruiser or a Shogun.I want the Disco so I need you guys to persuade my wife.

Looking forward to the answers,thanks.
Darrell

p.s we have around 6000 pounds to spend.

all you have to do is go test drive each one. make sure the missus does the drivin.

Well if she's anything like mine go and show her the others making sure that they colours she dunt like, then show her a nice 7 seater TD5 in her favourite colour-Job done:D

hi sorry going to go against the grain here i have a disco td5 ,but i would go for shogun or landcruiser parts are more readly avaliable over there ,landrover parts would be hard to get and exspensive ,and if you watch any news footage of hot dusty countries you never see a landrover these days its a shogun or landcruiser or patrol.as much as i like my disco i will be going back to japanese 4x4 as they are bullet proof ,ive had all sorts from a series 2 ,defender ,disco 200,300 ,td5 ,trooper ,patrol ,and shogun ,and the later 3 were the most reliable ,i tow a 3 ton trailer most of the time and do approx 30 to 40k a year ,the best tow barge was my l200 sorry to say and i know no ones going to like this reply, and just for the record if you are unlucky and it goes wrong milners do all the service parts at very low prices for above motors, but i must admit the disco looks the best .hope this helps as an honest opinion .

Fixing em's all part of the fun:D

Bolloxs about parts, you can get anything you want shipped from fanny Craddocks & the rest for a £5 up to 30kg!!

2 x front brake disc's,pads, seals etc..... £29 snakes +£5 postage ordered Monday got here (France)Thursday:) ONE disc for a Nissan has cost me more than £70 in the past!!!!!!!

hi darrell
What's the 4x4 for business /pleasure both? if so with what you say it's quite rugged out there so.
I would go for a later 300tdi defender 110 best spec your funds allow, lot easier for maintainance work on your self. td5 needs computer soft ware to carry out some work at independant garages/dealers . Also parts for 110 easliy obtained world wide also more room inside and with extra on full roof rack lot's of options open

Lynx40,i like the idea of the defender but I wanted something newer.Plus the clients are rather stuck up and would appreciate more than the basics.

I would also go for a Disco TD5, though not entirely bullet proof, they offer good reliability, are well equipped, comfortable, spacious and look great.

My previous Shogun was great when it was working but a real bugger to fix (and expensive!) when it went wrong.

As mentioned earlier, you can get parts shipped to Greece at relatively low cost from well known LR suppliers.

Good luck.....

Clutchdust, just been looking on e-bay at td5 and they look good. Are these cars bomb-proof?

Nothings bomb, bullet or idiot proof all depends on previouse owners, well serviced, has it been towing a 3 ton trailer round fields all it's life!

Clutch dust seid to get a TD5 and he works with them all day long.

Thought it was just the wife? I dont think you realy know what you want either!

Jason

Ps:You will be pushing it (not impossible) to get a 7 seater TD5 for £6k

Bought my missus a FL so I could be left in peace with my old 300tdi - can't bloody get her out of the 300tdi! Loves it! The guys on prev posts are dead on - parts no prob and at the right price, good td5 will give little probs and hey, you got all this lot on the forum for support. Steer her in the right direction and let her think she made the choice and you won't go wrong!

I wouldn't say bomb proof but pretty bloody good and more than man enough for what you want it for and for reliabilty, it ****es over the rest of the landy range. Excellent vehicle in my opinion.

I agree, great car seven seats, all the bits and get you anywhere whatever the wheather. If you want an independant view of all your choices check out honestjohn.com, but I warn you there are more bad points than good for the TD5, it also shows all recalls etc. Didn`t stop me though, I love it and so does the wife (THE TD5 THAT IS). Good luck
