Hi just a quick question

i drove the defender 300 tdi pick up 94 reg down hill quite steep for about 100m long. in low box 1st gear and with diff lock on (light on in dash) the rear wheel drivers side must have been locked as it just slide on top of snow and nearly pulled defender towards wall. inspecting the snow all other wheels left tracks but back wheel left a skid. tyres are mud tyres hankook big tread 14mm deep.

i drive this every day in snow with no problems for the last 6 years

has something gone wrong with the diff????

thanks for reading and would like any info to help

Have you tried reversing for any distance? Might be wound up. If you were in 1st Low then presumably you were engine breaking a lot? Might not be enough 'slippage' between the front and rear under these circumstances. Then again you say you've been doing it for six years!
Don't disregard seized brake either.

hi
thanks for reply

just to add a bit more info i drive it 30 miles to work and 30 miles back on motorway at
50 mph drove as normal on same day no knocks or bangs

tried same again tonight but no snow on tracks so drove into snow and stopped after and had a look at snow same thing back rear tyre slid.

car free wheels on mild slope so no brake seized

any more ideas??

Strange. Is it possible that the snow provides enough resistance to lock that wheel up ( still thinking brakes here! ). If it's diff related you'll need someone with more experience than me! I understand how it works but I'm not to quick with diagnosing!

thanks for you help.

this has me stumped too, last year the road (which is tarmac single tracked) had solid ice all over 2 inch thick due to me and a few neighbours compacting it with 4x4s wheels never slipped ever.

confidence is diminishing on this vehicle supposed to be best 4x4 by far.

lol

still will not swap it for anything else defenders for life not just for winter

just might have to go to the specialist for a quick spin
