Hi again lads and lasses

my disco doesn't start first turn in the cold mornings like it does in the summer.. turns over fast for a 3 seconds then goes.. would glow plugs help if my ones were dead as a friend of mine said they will make no difference in a td5 unless its mega cold?

if yours dont work then change them as they are also used after starting to help heat the cylinder, even after the glow plug light has gone out

Cheers Johnlad.. is there anyway to check if there working other than pull them out and see?

there is an easy way to check them in situ, with them unplugged measure resistance with digital multimeter across head and glow plug terminal, you must get between 0.75 - 0.95 ohm depends on brand... much greater resistance or open circuit means it's fubar'd

A good way to find out quickly is when it does start does it sound lumpy kind of "thud thud thud prrrrrrrrr" If it sounds abit rough it most likely is your glow plugs as some are warming the cylinders and its taking a few seconds for the failed plug cylinders to warm up and join the party ...

Hope that helps

Hi lads thanks for your replys, I am very scared about doing them as I'm one of them guys who seems to round off threads quite easy. Or am I just being a pussy? One thing I have noticed is when I start in the morning I can barely here the pump when I turn the ignition on. Iv already swapped it over to try and solve this turning fast from cold

I recently changed plugs as I had a spare set. A long reach 10mm socket, short extension and a ratchet. Be handy if you had a short ratchet as its a bit awkward. The 1/8th of a turn and you've ran out of room.

I have had another post, turns out my fuel pump wasn't running as it should. Sounds similar to your explanation. Good thing is your Disco has an inspection hatch to allow you to change the pump.

Hi mate cheers for your feedback. Iv already swapped pumps over from my old mans and that didn't make any difference. While I had hawk eye plugged in to I switched on and could here it clear as day and she started first swing

I always find it helps to remove them with engine warm/hot-the aluminium head expands more than the st /steel glow plugs
