L322 BMW V8 - Not another coolant leak ...and an oil leak for fun too

Valley pan manisfests in drips further back drips drips around the bell housing thingy. You can see the place where coolant leaks through a drain hole with a good torch but it is hard to know where to look unless you've had it apart and without pictures.

Charlie

Can you point me in the direction of where the bell housing actually is?

Anyone got any pictures?

Right....having got her up on a ramp today, my indy has diagnosed a faulty water pump.

So the questions that spring to mind are:

1) which is the best pump to fit?

2) is this a DIY job?

3) any 'how to's' would be appreciated.

Cheers guys

1) which is the best pump to fit?

4.4 Petrol V8 BMW - Island 4x4 - Specialists in Land Rover and Range Rover Parts and accessories for all models. UK and worldwide mail order.

I'd go with OEM. This is a personal thing but I would replace the thermostat, also see

for reference

2) is this a DIY job?

Yes, viscous fan tool aside - some people have luck with bashing the nut. The first thing to do is see if you can remove the fan.

3) any 'how to's' would be appreciated.

Come on Gull....you should know by now I would have done one!! :D:D:D:D:D

😁yep! Found it right after posting that!

Anyway, having read it.....I don't think I have the skill set to do it....

Been quoted £136 labour inc coolant and vat.

Does that sound reasonable?

Sounds very good especially since the coolant isn't cheap.

Good point Charlie....The coolant is gonna be around £25, so £111 for 3-4 hours work isn't bad for labour is it?

Also the guy recommends Blueprint water pump....any experience on this anyone? Is it a decent brand?

As for the thermostat.....just waiting for Rewmer to let me know where he sourced his BMW740d stat from?

If your guy's OK with it - go with the recommendations on here and supply you own parts - and just pay him for the labour and the coolant?

Not the greatest picture - this was taken before removal.

The inlet nylon elbow on the vaporiser was shot to bits. Literally crumbled away once I had the unit out.

I bought a refurb kit PRINS VSI Reducer Repair Kit (B,C,D,E) - my reducer had E4 on the label inside a circle.

from LPG Shop - Autogas Parts, Kits, Accessories and Conversion Equipment

I also rang them up to make sure I could disconnect the gas (there is a solenoid on the tank so it is okay to undo the gas pipe to the vaporiser.

Note, if you do have the same situation the new rubber disc looks totally different from what you remove (they were the same diameter). I checked with lpgshop and the deformation was simply due to internal pressures.

Note the rubber disc was not the cause of the leak, it was purely from the inlet elbow.

Hi Charlie,

Was this a simple job?
Also did you drain the coolant and refil the system?

I ask as I will be attempting the same job at the weekend...

Job was okay, just unbolt the unit as required. Note my vaporiser was held on using a bracket that was attached to the set screw coming from the suspension strut. This should be torqued to the correct value ...

There's no need to drain the coolant, as you take the pipes off quickly move them upwards and tie them up so they are high enough for the coolant not too come out. You will need to bleed the system and top it up a little due to some loss, see:

BMW E38 Coolant System Bleeding - Venting

Nice one Charlie,

Will give it a go as soon as I get all the bits. Will try and post a 'How To'
Doubt it will be in the same league as Saint.V8's! But will give it a go.
