Impossible to answer probably without looking and listening to my 110 td5 yourselves .
Its a 1999 with only 12000 miles up, 3/4 by me and its been serviced on time every time from new.
It started a whirring noise last week from the engine somewhere (a baring somewhere I think). It keeps with the revs , I can hear it at idol from cold and louder as I increase the revs.
If I press the clutch it makes no difference to the sound , so I don't think its the transmission .
Its still on the original turbo but I hope its a less expensive problem.
Would I even hear the turbo at idol ?
Thanks for any advice as always Jim

Sounds like you are describing oil filter noise from the centrifugal oil filter next to the turbo under the two bolt lid on the filter housing

I doubt it , I can hear that whine down after the engine is switched off and although I did not change it at the last service there is no more the 5000 miles on the old one.

Drive belt guide bearing ? Take aux belt off and go from there run it and see if it's gone

12000 miles on a 99 plate, you wish! Sounds like you need someone under the bonnet while you rev it, although, if you can hear it at idol could you not pop your head under to try and narrow it down?

Perfect that's what I hope it is.
Is there any point in uploading the sound here I wonder ? I expect to get a lot of burn it replies though;)
