I've just bought the bmw replacement vortex part from a bmw garage.
part number 11 12 7 799 367
I went to fit this and everything looked ok until I placed it into the housing.
There is a little plastic cutout on the part so the filter slides into the housing above the crank. But they do not align and prevents me from inserting it.
It fits perfectly into the cover I removed but not the housing.
I'm baffled

If you do a search on here I think you'll find that the fix is to file another notch in the bmw part...I'm sure someone will confirm this..

I did think of putting another knotch in but I wasn't sure if this would have any affect

Hope you got this sorted.
I'm looking to buy this BMW part online- and want to buy a genuine bmw part. Can't be sure what I've found on fleabay is genuine. Anyone kind enough to post me a link for the part?
Cheers,
Will

I have seen someone stating they had to put another knotch in but most people saying it fits stright in.
The person before me over tightend the bolts and one bolet was totally rounded off. Good job I usee some good engineering skills and managed to extract the bolt. My question is now. By cutting another notch in the part will it affect its performance of the bmw part?

Hi, some breathers just drop in apparently but mine needed the slot cutting. Drop the breather in place, mark with a pencil where the slot needs cutting, cut it with a junior hacksaw and file with a mini flat file and drop the breather in, job done. This might help – a 3/16th AF six point socket fits the Torx heads just right if you don't have the right Torx socket. Got my breather from ebay £19, I think. Works spot-on.

Nearly missed this - yes the open slot is ok, from memory the seal is on the outside of the slot so just fit it and you're away.

hi, im thinking of doing mine now. are there any advantages to doing this mod and are what symptons would you get if the filter gets blocked?

The benefit of fitting the BMW vortex filter is once it's fitted you don't need to bother with it again as apposed to the Land Rover loo roll type which has to be replaced at each service.

If the old loo roll filter gets blocked up the chances are you will get a build up of pressure in the oil system and the only way out is through the dip stick tube. There are pictures on the forum somewhere showing the result of an oil blow out.

the advantage is you don't have to worry about a filter being clogged up
although in both cases the vent valve itself can stick due to age or neglected oil changes .. or ..
i.e. should still be inspected and cleaned out with white spirit every so often
( i think bmw recommend every 3 years .. but don't quote me :)

~~~~~~~
if the filter bogg-roll filter gets clogged .. or the valve quits working properly ..
well .. the crankcase pressure won't vent ..
that leads to issues with the turbo as the oil supply to the turbo bearings gets screwed due to the crankcase pressure effecting the oil drain from the turbo to the sump ..
~~~~~~~~~~~~

and .. no crankcase pressure vent also means the pistons are having to work harder
as a 'pump' .. ..
might not happen to a td4 .. but have seen a sump blown off by unvented pressure
on a large diesel ..
( i.e. in that case it were thought that the crankcase fumes ignited )
excessive crankcase pressure can also cause engine oil seals to fail

in short .. the crankcase needs venting ..
( i think you'll find a crankcase venting system on just about every internal combustion engine ever made )

strange some need this notch , bought one from my local bmw dealer and went straight in with no problems

did check it 2 years later and all it needed was a wipe with a rag

maybe the ones on ebay arnt genuine, or are seconds ????

reminds me i must buy some silicone hoses as the originals are still on there and very soft
