The bearing on my transfer box needs done as there is a fair bit of play on the front flange. I have been getting vibration and steering wheel wobble at 50 plus which I have attributed to this (no this isn't another thread like the last one). I've had the wheels properly balanced and replaced UJs so am I right in blaming this bearing for the vibration and wheel wobble? Or could this be caused by something else? The bearing will be getting replaced anyway but I wanted to be certain that's what was causing the problem

My crystal ball says that you need to fix this and see how things progress

Yep, the usual Landy cycle

Problem - replacement - problem remains - disappointment - replacement - problem remains - disappointment - replacement .............

wobble in your steering is more likely a ball joint, swivel ,poor tyres and tracking ,off set steering box ,bushes etc ,get someone to rock steering wheel hard whilst you hold various parts like drag link, track rod etc

t/box output bearings are stc1130,seal ftc4939 , input gear bearings are frc5564g, only input gear come as timken as output bearings are ball bearings not taper

Rather than start a new thread ill ask her. Ive got a cross drilled input gear at home and i want to fit it to the motor but i know that there are different numbers of splines depending on the year, i think 26 and 28. Does anyone know which one a 1996 300tdi 110 transfer box would require or is it a case of pulling the gear and checking it? Just that id rather do the job all at once before i go buying new bearings for this spare input gear ive got only to find it wont do. Ta muchly

defender 1.410 box will use ftc5089 26 tooth input gear, if your old bearings are ok you can just swap to new gear and fit whilst box is still connected to gear box
