Hi guys. Bit of a weird one this. Front brakes were tired so renewed discs and pads with pagid items. noticed on strip down the lower slider pin gaitor on drivers side was ruined so pin had pretty much seized hence the main reason for replacing pads and discs on the front.
there was grinding noises coming from the front drivers side so put that down to the pads being pretty shot. changed pads and discs and renewed the gaitors and regreased the slider pins so they had fluid movement but the grinding noise remains when braking hard.
if i apply the brakes softly there is no noise. it sounds like drivers front and almost like the pads and discs need renewing but thats already been done. i checked pads as i know they can be inboard and outboard but all four were identical.
i havent checked rears yet but i'd swear blind the noise is coming from the front. i dont think its the abs kicking in either. definitely grinding noise! very strange...

I'm suffering the same thing.
Have changed the front pads then discs & now slide pins, still the same noise though.
Have now just bought new rear brake cylinders for the rears.

I had a similar thing once. It turned out to be the discs. Even though they looked perfectly OK, it was poor quality cast iron that the discs were made of that was causing it. Sometimes finding the cheapest new discs doesn't pay. You may also notice there's a lot more brake dust thrown out, manifesting itself as always dirty and hard to clean wheels.

Lift the front wheels to see what's catching/rubbing. You may not find anything as braking at speed with the forces involved will be different but as nodge ses it could be something simple like the shield rubbing. This would be an easy first diagnostic step.

Thanks for the replies guys. The discs are of the best quality, pagid as opposed to the dodgy land rovers oe stuff, Lucas.
The discs are held in place by two pozi 2 screws and then by the wheels once it's bolted up do I think the discs are holding true.
The only thing I can think of is the rears even though it sounds like it coming from the front?! I don't know. Completely at a loss.

The splash shield is worth a look. It could be a small amount of play in the wheel bearing that under hard braking is pulling true forcing the disc in contact with the shield.

hi. the shields were pretty shot and they were catching on the discs so i pushed them away a bit, fitted the discs and pads and span the hub to see if the discs weren't rubbing again and all was quiet apart from the pads sitting against the discs. just wondering whether its a cv joint, inner or outer thats moving but that wouldnt explain the grinding noise...hmmm

Right had my mate look at it and the noise has changed to a more of a drone noise coming from the front centre so thinking now towards the ird, gearbox, prop shaft. Mate said it just coincides with braking that this drone is noticeable.
If you slow down quickly and loose speed quickly u can hear the drone loudly but if u slow down gently it's hardly there. I've had Austin at bell engineering check the vcu and prop and all was ok. Worried now it could be the ird but Austin said it's already been replaced. Currently on 87k td4.

cheers mate. it does sound like a bearing noise now. its that droning noise, a bit like a jet engine shutting down when i stop. is there bearings in the gearbox or ird that could be stressed when braking hard to make this noise??
cheers guys :)

Hi guys. Me again. So the noise is now more like a droning noise when braking. If I brake I can hear it but stops when I stop braking. It sounds like a bearing so a bit worries it maybe something in the ird or gearbox that might slowly be damaging the drivetrain?! Anyone had anything similar? Cheers.

i thought it was when i was in gear but i'll check when its out of gear. its strange, its like a bearing drone noise when i brake and it puts pressure on something like a wheel bearing but i'm not going to start chaging wheel bearings if its not thats. it does sound like its coming from the front centre??

sorry nodge forgot to reply to u. the vcu has been tested my bell engineering and it was given a clean bill of health but the front prop shaft gaitor was spilt so all the grease had emptied. they supplied a front prop for me and fitted it one eve at austins house in cleobury mortimer. i'm just hoping its something more serious like the ird or gearbox thats going to cost mega bucks to sort about a month or two down the line as i know the whole 4wd system is a bit weak.

right so ive had her back out on the road and shes droning away whens she's in gear or not when i break and put weight on the front axle......wheel bearing or maybe a cv joint inner thats moving when breaking??
