Not sure if I'm imagining it but I'm nearly 100% certain my disco 300 tdi runs better on a full tank compared to a quarter full one or less , just seems to have more go with loaded tank? Maybe I'm imagining it but also wondering if it could be a symptom of fuel pump going or something else ? Fuel filter was changed 2 weeks ago when done big service

What grade did you put in ?

They will go noticeable faster with premium stuff, using cheap supermarket fuel makes mine more sluggish,

Top tip, before filling up, if you that anal about your fuel, ask when the takes were last filled, you'll get less ****e in your tank, but thats why your filter is there !

Hi mate thanks for reply , Iv been using tesco stuff since owning it not tryed anything else but I will give the bp or she'll derv ago

Also try blanking the EGR,

those few extra horsepower will be noticeable and will help,

on a high mile motor, i'd put a full tank though then a couple of regular branded tanks, then go back to supermarket stuff,

Could just have gunk in the system thats built up, that expensive diesel is worth it for cleaning out old motors, some add a squirt of petrol (has a similar effect) but it will make a noticeable difference

If you want to really clean the system out run a few tanks of biodiesel through it, just make sure you carry a spare fuel filter as all the crap thats built up over the years will end up blocking the filter.

My darling wife ran our 300 tdi (with 180k on the clock) very low on fuel. It started chucking out loads of white smoke out of the back when I started it and drove up the road. As soon as I got it fueled up it ran fine. God knows what evil was lurking at the bottom of the tank! I've told her not to ever let the poor thing go through that again!!

Sounds like water in the bottom of the tank , if you still have a sedimenter fitted, ( by the rear wheel up on the chassis), give it a clear out and try not to run it too low again ...

Nice one👍, that's good to know, I'll check that out, my heart sank when I saw the smoke, thanks dippypud

I'll also add that to my weekend to do list , anybody know the o ring size need that needs to be replaced?

You might have a knackered lift pump, the more fuel in the tank the easier it is for the injection pump to draw if the lift pump has failed.

Ah ok thanks mate is it easy to replace?

Not too bad. It's bolted to the engine block near the bulkhead on the drivers side. Easy way to tell if its working is to open the bleed screw on the fuel filter housing then there should be a manual lever on the side of the lift pump. If you start operating it the fuel should start pouring out the filter bleed screw.

Ok that's great thankyou I'll have a poke about at the weekend and report back

Cheers
