changed my oil and filter last week , while wiping the inside of the plastic filter holder/cover the plastic circle shown in photo fell out  now in the past I had noticed a kink in the used filters , and to be honest just thought it was a freelander/LR quirk , however the circle is a seal retainer from an old filter that's come adrift (one at each end of the filter) that must of stuck to the holder and causing the crush/kink in the replacement filter when tightening the housing up , its just something else to look out for !

cheers :) good to know these things

Would you not have noticed that when replacing the O-rings on the top part ? , Or was it in the bottom part ? I normally clean as much of the old oil out of there with an old cloth !

this was in the top section and must have looked like part of the holder in the past , when it fell out this time I thought that's not happened before , I even tried to put it back in  then the penny dropped , evans halshaw did two oil changes and they were none the wiser still the kink , I change my oil and filter every 6 months and that bit has been there before I got the car !

I used genuine LR or mann or mahle oil filters , Never had one fall apart like that and last thing you want is bits of paper filter blocking engine oil ways

I also have used LR , double the price of mahle that I now use , I did try to remove the seal retainers from the used filter in the photo , but they broke , so putting it down to a one off filter fault , could of been worse if the faulty end was put in the bottom of the housing , the main bodies of the filters have been intact !

Funny because our BMW 320d (same engine) has never had this problem and i always use the same filters bought off the internet........

I’m a cap 1st man as I can feel it click into place......Sometimes it does not, so I flip the filter around and try again..... Some filters are harder to fit into the cap than others.....or maybe they go in a certain way.......Just my observations
