Hi all,

My tailgate wont open for some reason...search undertaken but I,m still a bit stumped.

Glass does not drop a bit as it should, taligate lock stays shut, no noise from the relay when the handle is operated, there is a small click from the microswitch.

Everything works fine - glass drops raises with the dash switch and with the key in the tailgate lock, wiper works as it should and is parked correctly and the window recalibrates as it should...no beeps at all.

Ive checked the handle springs they are fine, the microswitch has continuity when the trigger is pressed - I double checked this by bridging the two corresponding microswitch wires that hang out the back of the door when the handle is off - nothing.

I've read on here about either the glass will drop and the lock stays shut and other threads say the lock would open but the glass would not drop ...I can't seem to find aything about neither working ...apart from some threads that had handle microswitch problems ...my microswitch appears to be working fine so any ideas anyone?

HI
Had a problem with mine a while ago and this is what I did. Climb inside and take the rear door trim panel off. Disconect the electrical conection. Remove the torx screws from motor which holds the black plastic cover. Pull the bottom of the plastic cover like mad. It wont break just bends. Hold the cover away from motor. I used a screwdriver. Get a small mirror and position it between the plastic cover and the motor so you can look up and see where the release lever is. Its about 3-4 inches up on the left of the motor. I cut a scewer down to make a hook. Remove mirror and holding away the cover slide the hook in and up and pull.I thought it was going to be a mare but I got it on the 2nd try. The catch solenoid gets rusted up so you can try opening it up and giving it a good clean this sometimes works. If not renew catch solinoid job done.

Thanks ....when you had your problem - did your window still drop a bit to clear the top seal ?
Cheers

Think I need to check behind the rear quarter panel for any broken wires - a trip to Halfrauds for me on tuesday coz I don't have any male torx sockets.... oh the joys:)

Sounds like the solenoid is not releasing, go with NeilC option above, or empty a can of proper penetrating fluid around the solenoid, assuming you still have the rear handle off

Cheers - so would a faulty solenoid stop the glass from dropping clear ?..or am I over thinking it lol

Thanks
Brack

In your other post, you said you hear a click?

There is a 440 millisecond delay before the door solenoid is actuated, this time delay is controlled by the CCU.

You can do a self diagnostic thanks to our Hippo!

Yes thanks - the micro switch clicks - as i understand it the signal from the switch asks the ccu to glass drop first then the solenoid 440 miliseconds later.

I bridged the two corresponding wires but nothing happened pretty much ruling out the micro switch

I'm just not sure that the solenoid is the first place to look thats all... as in other threads that Ive read the glass drops but the door sticks - on mine the glass doesn't drop so assume the door wont open for that reason maybe lol

My freelander is an old 98, I've tried the self test with Hippo the other year but we found that mine dunt have this function.

Thanks for all the help so far, I will dimantle the lock tomorrow - but will it re lock ok if its not repairable? thats all I'm worried about to be honest.

Cheers
Brack

Does the window drop using the door switch. If the window doesn't drop then the lock shouldn't release, I don't think? I'm sure there is a switch on the window chanel to tell the CCU the window is down enough to release the door.

Cheers Nodge ...do you mean dash switch? the glass drops and raises fine on the dash switch...it goes up on the tailgate switch with the key.

The tailgate door will not open with the glass lowered (by pressing the dash switch) though.

I didn't know about a switch in the channel ...thanks I'll investigate :)

This is the link to my rear tailgate problem, might be of use.

From what I can remember the only sensors are inside the tailgate motor....these must detect where the window is and tell the ecu, hence the calibration procedure....and there is a micro switch in the door lock and the one you press in the handle.... I do know that the door lock switch has to detect that the door is shut before it will drop the window and open the door...have you check this micro switch in the door lock?

Thanks jedi for the info and link, thanks for your previous help too;)

I was going to start to get the lock off today but the wife has other things planned...Ive got more info to go on with this, thanks very much to everyone who has helped so far:)

Hi Brack
Lots of good info here. I can't remember if my window opened a bit when trying to open the tailgate. What I'm doing in my other post was releasing the tail gate manualy by moving the latch in the solenoid down to open it. Once opened you can try the handle and see if it is opening or not. Still reckon on it being the catch solenoid. You only have to be a bit flexible to get yourself in the boot from the passenger door. Playing alot of twister helps.

Hi neilc, yes I have a hooked bit of wire on it now so at least I can use it - thanks for the info ...worked a treat ..hopefully I can get a bit further with it over the weekend ;)

Well the door latch motor works well with two 9v batteries wired up to it ...so that works

The lock mechanism micro switch must be ok because the dash light (door open) comes on and goes off with the door

Took off the lock / motor unit and lubed up the lock - seems to work well manually.

Had the rear side panel off - swapped the brown tailgate wiper and window relays over - no difference.

Checked for any broken wires at the hinge side of the door - none found.

Checked the connections at the window motor

Checked the earth point

I'm out of ideas ...Its just lost the signal to window drop and open somehow
