Hi all
Please can somebody help?i had my 110 for around 6months now and this is first problem and I'm stuck as only know basics when comes I it.for last 6months when driving the gauge stayed just over the half way mark, and couple times went up to 3/4 mark but yesterday it went up as high as it can go.my dad suggested the thermostat so I took that out tonight and it still went up to the red after about 7-8mins of idling.dad took rad cap of when running and we could see water pumping around in the rad.also dad pointed out that the top hose coming out of the rad is hot to touch and the bottom hose coming out the rad is cold to touch when running this isn't right is it?please can any body suggest what could be?
Cheers benn
I have also posted in its a V8 mate. Section

Try running your hand over the radiator to see where it is hot and cold as you should feel some heat on the bottom of the rad and indeed the bottom hose. It sounds like you may have a blocked radiator so I would try flushing it. Put clean water in at the top and see what comes out the bottom. Also try removing the thermostat altogether and see if that makes a difference.

Thanks for replys when I had the cap off the rad the it boiled over when got really hot on gauge.i did remove thermostat and it still overheated so I'm guess it can't be that?at weekend I try flushing out the rad, hope it is just blocked rad.are there any Meagre faults that can cause overheating?

Re: V8 overheating!
I just flushed out rad not much came out just few small flakes, now the bottom hide gets as hot as the top hose so guessing tgats how it's meant to be?but still eventually gauge went into the red after ten minutes.the gauge goes up steadily, would this still rule I. Cooling temp gauge?cheers

Blocked rad
Dodgy thermostat

Or hgf as the older 3.5 tip heads and cook oil in valley

I have taken out the thermostat ,and I flushed through the rad and seems to be clear the water was running through clear.what does hgf mean ? Pleaee best with me as only know the very basics

Okay the rover v8 is an old gm design and the 3.5 was seen as the most reliable as later 4.0-4.6 suffered slipped liners, though some lr 3.5 service engines did show slipped liners.

With regards to Head Gasket failure later engines removed 3rd row bolts as over time the heads would tip and a small amount of combustion gases would enter valley under carbs and cook oil.

On several bad ones I have seen the valley gasket raises and distortion.

Do not keep driving it as you will cause more damage if you don't fix fault.

have you checked oil level? are the hoses actually full of water,or just air,as this can cause it to boil over and seem like its hot,but its just got a massive air lock! take hoses off and fill to the top with water, same with rad,tip water down top hose into rad! make sure its bled properly! check water pump impeller is turning? is pressure cap faulty? might be a total miss, but its all worth checking. have a coolant pressure test done too! hope some of this helps!

Ah ok make sense thanks,I haven't drove it since it overheated.is there any way if confirming its that and how would I fix it? Oil level is fine,I'm pretty sure that the pipes aren't full up with water so will go through it tommorrow thanks for replys

hard hoses and if your local garage has exhaust gas analyzer get them to put it under bonnet with engine running, this gives background hc (hydrocarbon in exhaust gas)

then over open expansion tank if HC jump- then it is head gasket.

Also look at valley gasket for signs of lifting bulge

Compression test worth doing.

if oil light flickers when hot another tale tale
