Thanks, the air filter is new and the hoses are in good condition

The erg valve is pretty scuzzy I shall clean it and have a fiddle

try Watson's diesels, Elm Crescent, Wimbledon SW19, they will give you plenty of free advice and the old boy that run's it wont rip you off if you decide to get them to look at your motor, good luck with sorting it out

Thanks Mark

I may well give those guys a shot.

Would it help to blank off the EGR valve........or would that just cause more problems

Assuming the EGR valve actually closes properly, you can disable it simply by removing the vacuum pipe that goes to the EGR diaphragm. Block the flexible pipe with a suitable screw.
No harm in disabling or blocking the EGR.

Thanks Keith

I guess from what you guys said earlier, that it is malfunctioning and not closing would a good clean sort that or will I have to replace it

A good clean and check the spring pressure closing it is good. No need to replace it, if it closes properly, disable as in my previous post, if it's fecked, you can block it at the pipe connection from the exhaust. The engine will live longer without it and it will pass the MOT.
When you have checked the EGR and eliminated it, you can try disconnecting the MAF.

I had a similar issue to this when I had my p38. It turned out to be cam timing. It used to start and run fine but had clouds of black smoke on hard acceleration. It only has to be out the smallest bit to cause it.

Think someone is having you on. Cam timing moves as chains stretch, does not cause smoke, only over fuelling or lack of air can cause smoke.

If the EGR is not shutting quickly or is not disengaged by the ECU on higher power demand. On the dropping of a gear the increase in fuel to raise the RPM would give you the smoke. If the spring in the EGR valve is weak or broken the sudden boost pressure increase can cause blow by into the manifold. Which would also result in smoke as insufficient combustible air would be present causing an incomplete cool burn.

On a slightly related topic, the missus put the expensive Shell fuel in for a few months and mine definitely ran cleaner on it. Almost no smoke on hard acceleration whereas Esso's cheapest normally leaves a cloud behind me at 4k revs if cold.

Wammers, yes that sounds bang on, strange that the exhaust gasses cool the combustion process, always thought the exhaust gasses were raging hot!!

Grrrr may give the expensive fuel a shot, but I think it's a little more complex
