Finally got another Freelander...

Now up for sale as I've bought a 5 door Nissan X Trail last night as we've just had my first sprog! Th only half Chinese ginger baby in the area.... very rare to achieve!!!

I'm getting the Freelander bug again. This was my last one and it was a good one, especially after all the work I did but the rear diff blew it guts out and locked up at 85mph on the A34 which wasn't fun. That was when I'd swore I'd never get another Freelander again. Bloody Freelanders...

Anyway, getting the itch again. Think I'd have learned but no. Can't decide on a really nice 3 door like the one above but probably an HSE this time, or a Freelander 2. I really like the 3 door quirks and features which the much better FL2 doesn't have. Yes it's a much much better car but sorely lacking in the character- the drop down tailgate window, the removable roof panels and roof, and I just love the look of the facelift Mk1 in black. But they're crap. But i know whatever I buy will involve a lot more money and crawling underneath to make it good. But the FL2 is just dull. My dad has the facelift FL2 which he bought new and has absolutely no problems with it so I know they're good. It's either this or another XC90 or Another Daihatsu Sportrak.


So the question is- How are FL1s doing with another 10 years on them? Have all the bolts etc rusted solid underneath? I have an X350 2003 Jaguar Super V8 which is absolutely lovely, bloody fast and aluminium, but all the steel underneath- subframes and bolts- are just masses and lumps of rust so its got to go as you can't work on anything because every job involves cutting at least one bolt. I ronically I bought it instead of an L322 Rangie because of their rust issues...

Are things like the Rover Ron box available or can you get remaps on the TD4 now easily? Anywhere sell the soft tops yet or is it still just get on ebay on a blue moon?

So many questions.. think I need to drive one again to see if my rose tinted contacts are playing up. Anyone near Newport Wales Got a facelift Mk1 or FL2 I can have a go in briefly..?

My '99 L Series is still boringly reliable after 12 years+ of ownership.

I don't have the salt induced rust issues over here though.

I can't recall ever replacing any suspension bits - bushes, joints, arms etc. Its not very high mileage, about 150k miles, but is 24 years old! Mind you I do now have a persistent clunk that isn't fixing itself, so I'm probably going to have to look at that - I imagine its the LH drop link, or maybe the roll bar bushes - its mainly when the LH wheel goes over a hole or bump.

Its a shame this old girl is exactly not what you're looking for in terms of engine, doors, facelift, erm location! and probably price cos they want £3.5k for it. Stunning example of an early K Series car and probably worth every cent they are asking for it. I bet its almost as clean underneath as the day it left the factory.

I've returned to a Freelander 5 times over the years.
There's something about them which is rather appealing. I've had 6 Freelander 1s of various years, models and engine types.
I'm now onto a Freelander 2 which is very different from the FL1, but equally appealing and possibly nicer to drive too. I'd rather use my FL2 in preference to the wife's Audi A5, dispite the Audi being much faster, better handling, more fuel efficient, and having a much better stereo system.
 
Are these atchualy any good?
I'm after a project for the winter, thinking series 3 .
However I'm considering anything really.
Series 3 rovers are very expensive....

Freelander 1 or Freelander 2, presumably a 1 if you're after a project.
I depends on your definition of good. Good to drive? Compare to a series or defender then yes, much more civilised. If you want to plug through a foot of thick mud, then it's not the best vehicle for the job.
As a general highway / bad weather vehicle they are pretty good, and pretty easy to maintain.

It's like any vehicle. Condition is directly related to how the vehicle has been looked after. If the owners don't give a crap about it, then those vehicles are best avoided.
There are good ones about, but good ones are normally expensive.

I looked and saw a reasonable car for age, admitting a fault so sure400- 500 would get it.
you want a project I can tell ;)
So make up you mind what you want, then here will be help you deal with it.

Of course none of us know what skills, space or tools you have so to suggest anything would be a wild guess.

£695 for a rusty Freelander is ridiculous by anyone's standards.
Those junk wagons are only worth scrap at best.
If I was to get one of those running it would be for smashing up at the banger race track

How do you know it's rusty, have you been to look?
My thinking is you are just a troll.
