Clunk on defender pulling away

I've been concerned for a while about a clunk that happens when you pull away or change gear on my td5 110 county. I've just jacked up one side and with handbrake on tried to turn the wheel. There must be at least three inches of play!!! Any ideas gratefully taken on board before something breaks.

Check your UJs and a frame balljoint first. UJs are normally the most common culprit for causing clunks when letting off or taking up drive

I have this same problem but when I checked the ujs they were solid, the play feels like it's inside the axle, any ideas?

Worn splines on halfshafts or drive flanges. Hopefully. That's an easy fix. If not it could be diff

A-frame ball joint?

Do the half shafts just pull out the ends?

On the rear they do. On the fronts they're attached to the CV joint but its a doddle to strip down if need be

Don't forget drive members - they can cause clonks when splines are worn.

I will check the a frame balljoint. However I'm concerned too about the amount of travel when trying to turn the wheel. Surely at least three inches is too much?

Jack it up and check the play on the prop. I can't remember the figures exactly but this is the best place to check for play. You will always get play at the wheel and in the props but excessive play will hint at a problem somewhere
