Which chassis paint?

Hi all, this summer im looking at stripping bodywork off and cleaning the chassis up, as well as painting some other items like bull bars etc. My original plan was red zinc oxide followed by hammerite, however I've come across cheaper chassis black paint. Would red zinc oxide followed by hammrite be just as good?

I am about to do the same thing; follow this post http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f7/defender-bodywork-rebuild-187304.html and will be using hammerite red oxide, with the application of Kurust in some places (chassis is pretty much rust free, just the odd bit I can't get access to sand or grind off).

Then I am going to paint it with either hammerite black, chassis black, or a 2pack black paint. I will probably stone chip the rear crossmember, outriggers and bit's that will likely get stones thrown up at them before the black paint goes on.

I was thinking of then waxoyling on top of that but not sure I will now as once it's all a nice black paint I can see better what's going on, it's a LOT easier to rub down and recoat in the future and I'll just stick to waxoyle in the chassis - beforehand I will srpay a mist of KURUST in there to neutralise any rust.

I am at the metal workstage getting things ready for galvanising, so as soon as that's gone for dipping I'll be onto prep and paint - once I can get all the old waxoyle off!!!

I've thought about waxoyl as well, but will see what i'm like timewise. My priority is to get bodywork off, sort chassis, get bodywork back on (with new bulkhead) so it's in a driveable condition for end of august when i'm moving down to Winchester!


At least Waxoyl could be done a little later.....Also maybe (probably) wanting to repaint the body, as lots of different shades of blue and also red at the moment (and white for the bulkhead!)

Chassis black every time. Its designed for commercial chassis and is tough as owt!

I did the chassis on my 2a when I rebuilt it, 10 years later its still not broken through.

Well worth spraying loads inside the chassis and bulkhead - personally prefer Ankor Wax

Similar price to Waxoyl but easier to spray and disperses rather than traps water as it goes on

What size tin if "commercial chassis black" would you need for a defender county 110????

I've used 2k paint on my chassis and I am well happy with the results.

As for the amount of paint needed it depends if you are brushing or spraying it on. I've used about 1.5 litres of primer plus the same amount of topcoat for my 90 chassis. I would have thought a 5 litre tin of chassis black would be enough for a 110 chassis if you're brushing it on.

Yeh a five litre tin will be plenty
