Hi Guys

Sorry if this is a really stupid question in advance! I bought a new Defender 90 xs about 4 weeks ago and decided today was the day to have a look at the engine and educate myself - or try. I noticed some rust on the common rail and some other places near that (sorry not clued up enough to know what parts are called) and was just wondering if this is normal on such a new engine?
Have rung Land Rover and there calling me back but I thought if anyone can help it would be you guys. Any advice would be much appreciated, thanks.

If you didn't know already GemV, trasits have the same engine, hence the post above. I have seen parts on other new cars start to get surface rust too, even in daft places like seatbelt brackets. I can only presume that the type of metal used is very susceptible to corrosion from even a little moisture/condensation. I can't give any precise information as I don't have a newer Defender, nor will I have the opportunity given the fact that December 2015 is coming... :( Just keep being persistent with the dealer, keep phoning them if they don't get back to you, don't let them ignore you. All dealers are the same once something is out of the ordinary and you don't like something. Once they've got your money they don't care, all they care about is sales and selling service packages. Its a shame the people that run the dealerships aren't always as genuine as the people that are Land Rover. Most of the people working at the dealers couldn't give a toss about the company and its prestige, its just a job to them.

I wouldnt worry about that. Its a 2.2 injun?
Might have a butchers at some of ours if i remmeber

Thanks guys. It is indeed a 2.2. The chap who sold me the car is great and I would highly recommend him, he did ring me back but it's been a phone tennis day so I'll email him the pics and see what they say. On the plus side I now know where the common rail is so at least I have learned something new today! :)

Is that normal for a brand new defender from a land rover dealer?

I'd say its a downside from using a Ford Engine,

That said from test driving the 2.2 its a good motor, but lacks grunt in the low range gear box, capable though, but all those electronics,

Still, at least being a transit engine parts should be easy to come by !

Gutted I bought a new one thinking I wouldn't have to worry about anything for a few years which would give me time to learn what the score is!

you dont really have to worry....its never going to rust away :)

As has been said, all transits are the same. That rail can get quite hot so maybe thats why.

Odds are you where unlucky to get rust on it this early,

However going off what you said its still under warranty, which is very good for you,

I'd reckon, if not found it would of been OK for a few years,

Dont know much about the ford engines,

From what I do know however, check the hose's regularly,

Hopefully they fixed it by now, but a while ago a bracket was eliminated from one of the hose's which when it got hot would expand and touch something which after a while would cause a failure,

I suspect its been rectified,

What "luxury's" did you opt for ?

I got the XS and upgraded the alloys, am now skint! so the only other thing I've got so far is two front rubber floor mats :) loads of stuff I want to add to it but I need to do my homework first and save some money to do it.

Dont know whats in the XS, but you want a heater, preferably both front and rear demist, and a cubby box, fit your own better Stereo and Speakers,

Then you have a Defender you can live with everyday,

This part must have been left unpainted for a reason. I laughed at another I saw recently, as the vehicle had been on the road for 2 weeks and it was rusty.

My paperwork says alloys too, I'll regret that when I bash them on stuff! Gorgeous dog by the way :)

The XS comes with the heaters, heated windows and stuff but the stereo and speakers are definitely going as soon as I've got the money.

Think they left quite a few other bits unpainted :( is that a nightmare to sort out?
