hi, when in 5th gear, if i have to drop to around 50-55mph it's almost impossible to regain speed without dropping down to 4th gear. is this normal for the age / mileage of this car.?

its an x-reg with 170k on the clock

Possibly, is it smoking?

not that i've noticed but as my rear winscreen wiper is broken i cant see much out the rear window, but as i say not that i've noticed
