Bad news about DPF removal - MOT 2014

Very bad news indeed -

The Government have announced they are to change the rules on checking for the existence of a DPF if the vehicle left the factory with one fitted.

To take effect from February 2014.

Depends how it's tested, that could be picked up by an emissions test.
Reading that link, I didn't know it was illegal to drive a car with the DPF removed. Some people on this site have admitted to breaking the law on a public forum!
(For the record, I drive a 1991 Defender which never had a DPF! )

I also didn't know that was how VOSA interpreted the need for a vehicle to retain it's original exhaust components - so yes, many of us have been running 'illegally'.

A DPF does not at present form part of the MOT.

Diesels only have a smoke test - so it cannot currently be picked up by an emissions test - because the vehicle doesn't get one under present rules.

You are probably quite right that an emissions test in a future MOT would be able to detect if a physically present DPF was an empty shell/ gutted out.

Forgive me for being a dumbass. What exactly is a dpf?

A dpf is another filter. Designed to take the carbon and other bits from the exhaust gasses and retain them. Your engine will occasionally inject extra fuel to up the exhaust gas temperature to effectively burn down the build up. This is often done on motorways etc.

The dpf is by its design restrictive. Which is why a lot of people have removed theirs from their vehicles.

Assuming they decide to test the emissions then they'll have to stay. Unless your vehicle is very clean running you could then theoretically get away with just the shell. Just like people who gut cats do. Or you put them on for mot then remove.

I don't like DPFs. I think the only ones this will affect is he TD5 onwards? I'm fairly sure the 300tdi won't have them and the 200tdi definately won't.

Ok gotcha. More stupidity from me but where is it? Ive decat, straight through and the standard back box.

There are hundreds of new bits of stupid EU legislation coming into force over the coming months and years. All designed to bring us in line with line with another EU member

They are trying to ban all changes from original spec. Here in France, they key the VIN into the MOT computer and as the test progresses it shows the standard configuration. Makes it quite difficult to get any changes through.

Why? Why the fook can't they just leave us alone..?


And one of the problems with DPFs is that they clog up and if used for shortish journeys, or around town, they don't get hot enough to clear out. More fuel is added to help raise temps and burn it off, but seldom works properly by all reports if used around town. This means higher emissions right in the environment they try to 'clean' and higher fuel consumption. This also means many people having to fork out for new DPFs if they have surpassed the point of unblocking. Complete waste of bloody time IMO- surely they can come up with a more efficient system?

I think the days of the Diesel engine are numbered.

Luckily manufacturer`s are developing some powerful small petrol engines which are nearly as economical as a diesel.

How long they will last in a heavy vehicle is another matter.

This cr4p going to be an EU wide piece of legislation. Quicker the UK gets out of the EU the better as far as I'm concerned!!

Too true - the day is coming when all MOT type tests throughout the EU will be similar and perhaps linked to one big computer network.

In the last issue of 'Special Notices' update to MOT Testing Stations in December one of the topics was how to input foreign registration plates and country of registration details.

The problem with all this emission legislation is it promotes fuel usage which directly increases CO2 output. Every time an engine is strangled by the next emission must have, the economy suffers and fuel consumption increases
All this started back in the 70's with the Green Party own goal and still they don't learn.
