iv tryed a few things now and am at a loss when it starts it chucks out white smoke hot or cold also at high revs it chucks out black smoke. iv checked glow plugs which were changed recently. changed filters still no avail im gona try the maf sensor next iv had a mechanic look he checked turbo and injectors. this my first Land rover and love it any help will be appreciated thx Dan

white smoke ? sure its not condensation burn off ? if it is white smoke that is unburnt diesel , can be problem if heater plugs are not operating correctly in the TD4 as they stay on after start if needed. htsh

thx for reply. it smells like unburnt diesel i did check glow plugs they all work but its happening when hot or cold

What is the pressure like in the cooling system ? Are you needing to top up the rad/tank.
White smoke is usually a sign of water. a blueish smoke is unburnt diesel and black too much diesel. When a glow plug packs up, its usually a difficult starter and once going loads of blue smoke and the sound of a misfire. popping or bass drum sound. Glow plugs can tell you the symptoms of engine faults. check out NGK's site or Champion. My P38 started today with loads of steam and tends to give out water vapour when cold.

Check and clean the contacts on the fuel rail pressure sensor.
If you have to crank it for a long time when starting probably an injector on the way out.

He could have done a leak back test on the injectors without sending them anywhere which would have been the cheapest quick test on them.

So... did 'they' reseat the injectors properly? If not, they will be quite upset and not work properly....

space monkey, what do you mean by reseating, ? the ones i have done are sealed by a copper washer, very unlikely compression would leak past the close tolerances, and the retaining clamp hold it very firmly inplace

so do not understand your comment ?

a few more details would help ie milage age etc, but if you have a done anywhere hear 100k, start suspecting the fuel pump,/fuel rail sensor etc

thx for help. however i beleve its fixed i bought the crankcase breather filter upgrade from bmw seems to of sorted im so glad love my freelander cheers for help

fitting a new crankcase breather wont have any effect on poor starting, you have most likely disturbed some wiring possibly the fuel rail pressure sensor,

What is does is ensures the mating surface of the head where the copper washer sits is mirror smooth. If there's any crap there the compression of the diesel will cause blowby due to incorrect seating. Mine had had the injectors removed a couple of months before I bought it, so I thought it would be an easy job to remove them. Wrong... They and not been seated properly, and despite looking clean, the injectors were seized solid with carbon crap that had blown past the washer. Proper seating (nice even shiny silver surface) would have prevented this.
