To be honest unless your a challenge competitor or a serious pay and player or perhaps a P&P marshall ;) You dont need a mega brand named winch as long as it gets some love a couple of times a year.

I got my warn as it was a bargain of eBay, it was labelled as a Warm winch! I can count on one hand the amount of times ive needed to use it.

I've lost count of how many times I've said do you need a tow and had a reply, its alright pal I've got a winch,

5 minutes later they come back and say fir done reason its not working but did last time, can I have a tow.

If I had to buy a lowlife winch now I would,

Spend £300 on a second hand warn rather than £300 on some brand new shiny Chinese one,

Both of mine have bin very deep in water and pulled me out and work fin still,

The 8274 the free spool should pop out at 8000lb to protect the winch mine has been drilled and pined as I have a bigger motor,

I use mine alot more than most people if you look after them they will be ok like anything

we are talking about 2 different winches made by same place a low end priced and your is top end so there is a big difference in quality of build and quality of material all affecting the difference in price

I also a a warn xd9000 I removed from the front and will be fitting in the rear, a second had one is around the same price as a new cheep one

That's been a good winch also, never let me down

Does anyone have any experience with buying from the Electric Winch Shop in Bradford...

Specifically, do they have winches on show in a showroom and in stock....Bradfords not to far from me and I am keen to get a winch v shortly and wouldnt mind a ride up there...

Dont want to roll up there thou if they dont have stuff on display or in stock !

Cheers

Mike

Goodwinch goldfish tds 9.5. Ive just bought one and know others who have them and swear by them. Best prices are at shows. Few of us got an excellent deal at newbury show. Might be worth waiting for next show.least youll get a new winch with warranty.

Yes,

I'm a boiler engineer and I first found the place when I was called to repair there boiler, I could have spent a fortune, since then I've had plenty of bits and so have my mates,

I'd suggest calling to check the have what your looking for but last time I was there it looks like the picture on the website, carefull not to drive past its signed up a roof rack super market.

Right, after a wonderful weeks leave where I have spent 4 out of 5 days at work and the other taking the Landy for its MOT :rolleyes:

I have time to start looking at these again.

I don't know enough about them, or have the knowledge to fix them, to buy a second hand one. But I do accept that if you do, it might be a better buy.

Whichever I get, will it fit onto my existing battery, or do I need a second battery. If I do what else will I need to make it charge and work

Thanks

you can buy used and get a bargain, maybe ask someone to help you rebuild it and learn how it works. Or you could buy new with confidence.

Personally i would by used and refurb, thats because i feel i can undertake that task. If you cant or dont want to ask anyone then buy new.

If your just doing greenlanes and the odd pay and play then you dont need anything that will pull an oil tanker up a beach!

There are people who will tell you you need plasma rope and an albright solenoid instead of the standard steel rope and the solenoid the manufacturer includes. Steel wire rope can cause damage if it snaps but plasma rope has its downside too. It degrades in the sun, it rots in the water. It needs looking after also. The standard solenoids although not waterproof are splash proof, an albright is waterproof but again unless your winching when submerged it isnt likely to cause too many issues as long as its sealed properly.

In reality you will use your winch a couple of times in a few years. Its alot of agro to use when the novelty wares off. Using a strop or a kinetic rope to tow someone out is much easier.

What he says!!!!

I had a champion winch for years, never let me down, plenty of power, solenoid never failed and steel cable was fine, cost me £360 brand new and is still going strong today on the front of a friends truck. Got used often enough, it's no competition winch but for the money was outstanding. Was the EWX12000i I believe, now branded as warrior winches I think bit still have 3 year guarantee, make sure you get a UK supplier though otherwise the warranty means jack

You were lucky. Mine failed so many times that after refurbing it and then it going wrong again ive replaced with a goodwinch tds goldfish winch for same money.i use my winch a lot for rescuing other people and for punch events.

Just to add a little more inspiration, or possibly confusion, I personally like Ramsey winches. I have had 2 of the Rep 8000's and found them to be excellent winches. I sold my first one with my old Discovery and then had a cheap winch let me down, so I bought another Ramsey. They are quite rare in the UK, as they are made and mainly sold in the US, but you do occasionally get second hand ones that sell for around the same price as a cheap no-name new one.

It's the case with any good second hand winch they cost the same if not more than a new cheep one.
