M O T day is approaching and the dreaded rust worm has eaten away at my fuel tank cradle. It's not certain yet whether its going to fail but it doesn't look good.
There was a thread started on which somebody was considering making new copies as an upgrade at a fair price cos the dealers want stupid money for a coat hanger quality part. Anyone know if there is a place I can get them at a fair price? or will i have to make one myself. Cheers all.

Thanks for the reply. The best thing for me to do is contact SES88 and ask if he's managed to get anything sorted. If not it's spend lots or DIY.

I tarted mine up for the mot , as the song went , first impressions are lasting impressions :D two years on the trot I have had to do it , rub it down , fill any holes with p38 filler and make good , then paint with rust beater , I am waiting to see what SES88 comes up with !

That's looking very impressive compared to what i've got. I don't think there's enough left of mine to tart up. Just have to wait and see? Cheers.

Mine is also in a terrible state, the plates are so rotten that every now and then I get a chunk of rot falling off on the drive. I'm trying to hang on until SES88 has made his modified fuel tank cradles.

I spoke to the guy you sent me the link to, but he'd already sold it :(

It looks as though the freelander has shown yet another weakness as there appears to be a lot of people with the same issue. Landrover has you by the short and curlies when it comes to parts and charge what they want. The quality of the original part is so poor that there is no way it's worth what they ask for it. Ripped off again!!! It can't be that difficult to bang together a copy part, or something that will do the job, can it?

Someone could make a full time job out of this part alone if they can produce within a decent budget. Come on unemployed welders, get the sparks flying and make some cash!!

Its not a welder you need, its a sheet metal worker lol, the employed one's need work too, especially when its their own business!

Its the fact it has to support the fuel tank, and take the weight. Along with getting the bends and the radii spot on, because of where it sits its not a 5 minute job, it'd take me a day just to CAD it up.
As soon as i get something to work from then i'll get on with it, but the process isn't an instant one, its a new product, they take time.

Cheers, just a thought that's all. I've probably got 2 weeks to get it sorted so don't know what to do other than spend a small fortune. I need the car on the road or no work.

I've managed to acquire a cradle this morning, picking it up thursday, so will work from that to get prices. I'll ressurrect the other thread with the poll

That's fantastic news! please let us all know how things are going, and what you've managed to price them at. To be quite honest though, I think I'd rather buy one from you that get a crappy original part at the main stealers price. It's got to be a higher spec if you make it cos landrover have used the metal that fiat left over in 1970. Well done mate.
