stupid gray smoke

My truck smokes. . a lot. Clouds of gray/white smoke at all times. Less at speed but still noticeable and very bad at idle. I thought advancing the timing a little might clear things up but after removing the cover plate and three tensioner bolts the 22mm adjustment nut is already as far clockwise as it can go. So no more advance there. It hasn't always smoked like this so i am hesitant to try adjusting the timing from the belt. So my next though is an injector that is stuck open or leaking. So my plan is to replace the injectors (i do not know how old they are). After that i start worrying about the pump internals. . .

The truck idles a little rough and seems to ave lost some pep (pep being relative here) at higher speeds/rpms

Any other ideas/thoughts on getting rid of the smoke? Agree, disagree?
 
One of the first things I would have checked was the rockers to make sure the valves are opening properly. I'd also me checking your timing to make sure its right. Then if be doing a compression test. Injectors are one of the last things I would buy. No point in spending money on parts without doing the basic checks.
 
Crack open each injector one at a time ! Engine running !! The dodgy injector will make little or no difference in your engines tone etc a good injector will drop a cylinder out when loosened !!!
 
Mine is exactly the same, it hasn't run for over a year, started it two days ago first turn of the key but has this white/grey smoke that smells of diesel. there is no oil in the water and no water in the oil but it is ticking over a little slow so thinking timing?
 
Thanks for the replies. I appreciate you guys giving me somethings to check into before i spend on injectors. Anyone got a link to a thread about checking/adjusting the valves i am getting error messages.
 
so that didn't work. in fact it made things worse. I going to go back into it tomorrow and try and adjust the rockers again. I tried for a "sticky fit" but maybe i was a hair too loose.
Is there a way to check to valve seals short of removing the spring?

they dont have to be absolutely perfect,if valve was passing you would here it
 
Well i finally got around to replacing the injectors and thankfully (after spending all that money) they were the problem. Only a little start up smoke now, no running smoke and a fair bit more power. Also lowered operating tempratures a fair bit, so it is clear the injectors were just dumping fuel into the cylinders.

now on to the drum brakes. . .
