I am always amazed at how delusional people are about National Service and it's effect. Considering most were only 18 when forced to join it is only natural that some would change their ways but they are the ones who would have changed anyway. All it did was let those with 'interesting' ways continue their ways in a different environment. The only actual difference was they had to get up when told to!
Why the dregs of society are always wished on to our Armed Forces I will never understand. I am a professional soldier, I believe our Forces are what they are because we are all volunteers. I do not wish to serve beside people who don't want to be there/are forced to be there. So in an open plea to all, please stop wishing that layabouts, thieves, murderers , etc should be made to serve in the Forces. You don't want them , so why should we have them!

Gets off my soapbox and wanders off to make a coffee ;)
Hope you feckin trip over your pink fluffy slippers, i alway wondered why i H8 tommies,
and to be honest, im still not sure, but the above quote vindicates me a little bit at least, fookin tw@t. Mouthy cants, think they are special, cant fart without permission, but plaguerise the views of their superiors, thank f*ck for rapists and murderers cos i wouldn't want to do it.

Your attitude to NS is pretty much the same as the attitude expressed by the majority of my sons regiment to women on front line duty and sharing a billet with homosexuals:eek:
I don't suggest that NS conscripts serve on the front line, only that 12 or 18 months learning discipline and respect would do a world of good and cost little more than the dole they are paid.
Can you imagine many of today's youth volunteering when the next major conflict occurs, as it surely will? At least if they have experienced some military rigor when conscripted they would be useful.
There are a lot of ne'er do wells who joined the French Foreign Legion to escape serving time for their missdeeds, it's one of the toughest military forces in the world.

Oh so myself and my colleagues are to use all the training we have gone through voluntarily to become the best in the world, to babysit the dregs of society but when push comes to shove it'll still just be us who put our lives on the line.No thanks, I'm a soldier not a corrections officer.
Can you imagine many of today's youth volunteering when the next major conflict occurs, as it surely will? In case you have been asleep for the last 20yrs, or just living in a country whose troops only carry a white flag, Britain's 'today's youth' have volunteered and many of them have paid the ultimate price!!
At least if they have experienced some military rigor when conscripted they would be useful.
There are a lot of ne'er do wells who joined the French Foreign Legion to escape serving time for their missdeeds, it's one of the toughest military forces in the world. Then let the FFL have them but until you have actually Served you have not earned the right to wish the dregs on those of us who do/will. Because you will find those of us who have served don't want and don't deserve the dregs forced on us.

On top of the above I can only laugh at this constant cry of people to bring back NS, especially when it is by people who know nothing of being in the Forces, conscripted or not.
So how about you go think of some other profession to wish layabouts/terminally lazy on. Maybe the fire service, ambulance service or even the police, they're all discipline based to a degree? Or does that idea seem ludicrous? Not any more ludicrous than forcing professional Forces personnel to have to put up with them.
Maybe we should just put them in boot camps (arbeit camp sound familiar?), with guards who will teach them discipline and respect.

On which note, I'm going to wander off and make a coffee and maybe have a biscuit. This thread has been hijacked enough and I refuse to discuss this anymore , especially with someone, who a: Does not even live in the UK and b: is just doing the old man's knee jerk reaction of bring back NS, without any real knowledge of the Forces.

Obviously the wrong time of month for rational thought.

That's nice of you to admit but I should have thought at your age no time of the month is right for you. Silly , old, sexist, fools, never have a good time of the month. I'd tell you to jog on but doubt you could manage it.

What the hell .............................. Jog on old man.

You'll have to be quicker off the mark than that. The old duffer has admitted he's not got anything rational to say, he's on block as I can't be doing with pensioners crying and was getting fed up with his constant whinging and negativity , anyway. Now I have crap tv on and have another coffee ............... but I wouldn't mind some of that popcorn if it's butter not salted :D

A woman trying to keep up with the boys, no doubt served in Afganistan and suffering from PTSD. I don't know what rank you hold, but I think you are dangerous, I wouldn't let you anywhere near a gun. :eek:Incapable of rational response and now sulking behind the block button, sad.

Would take a lot more than that to get me worked up ;) Something like another NDB RR on the road might get me worked up :p;):D

Doesn't need to be mixed popcorn, just get rid of the salty stuff* :D

*Realised after I wrote that bit it sounds wrong on so many levels :hysterically_laughi

You misunderstand what volunteer means. It does not just mean you do it for free, it means you chose to do it without being forced. Example, I volunteered to do overtime last weekend. Quite commonly in the military you're a volunteer if you chose to join up, rather than forced to. Our military has been a volunteer military since the 60s and all the better. National Service doesn't work.

You silly people.

Now for some reason I have heaps of snacks on my desk, so I suspect someone is trying to blackmail me for something. Enjoy your evening.

It's about time you young whipper snappers put us old biffers in our place, let's have proper sexual equality, ban gender specific sport, no mens' and womens' 100 metres - just have the 100 metres - no female and male tennis, or boxing - let's have equality brothers! (and sisters) women on the front line? No problem - they're just as capable - why would you need gender categories in other endeavours? It's just plain sexism...

I'd agree with wimminz on the front line, if the standards were not different for men and women. The US Marines have recently decided to allow women on the officer course, but only if they can pass the same course as men. The first batch of women all failed (some in the media have used this to **** on women), but so did about 40 other men of the 60 strong group of hopefuls.

The chart in front of me for British Army has different standards for men and women. Why?
The police removed hight requirements to let more women on the force. Why?

Why lower standards for "equality"? Keep the standards the same, that way we get true equality.
