Hi all,
Im new to this forum and about to purchase my first land rover. Firstly i would like to know about the naturally aspirated engine, would this be capable of going 70 mph? And are they generally good engines? how easy is it to transplant a tdi engine into a 110 as i hear they are much better?
Any help gratefull received,
Kind Regards,
Sam.

Only Time Yer Get 70 Mph Is Going Over A Cliff, Great Engine Though Easy To Work On, Be Interested To Here What OTHERS Say About A Transplant As I Might Do Simalar Next Summer

Great engine got one myself, mine will do 70/75 after a bit of a wind up, simple mechanical fuel injection, as said easy to work on, and a turbo can be added fairly easily, although I am happy with mine as is.

The TDI will drop in easily enough, was contemplating a 200 myself when I rebuild my 90.

I used to have a 90 with the 2.5 n/a and it was great for trundling round country lanes and offroading, if you go on the motorway it will reach 70-75 if its a good one but is happy at 55-60 and will take quite awhile to get there !! I brought mine up from Derbyshire to Fife in Scotland and even climbing to the top of the Shap summit it never dropped below 55. So as long as speed is not important I would give it a chance before you change it.

Yea, mine works out at about that aswell, it gets no less than 25 really, and will get 30 on good runs up and down the motorway.

mines seams good, takes a bit of a wind up on the motorways. seems to suffer on hills though. does anyon else suffer with hills? my speed gets sapped pretty quickly. might be all the excess weight my 90 is carrying! good offroad though. and i picked my 90 up well cheap because of this engine... its a great introduction :)

HOW MUCH !! im getting 18 mpg , help what do i need to do ? would new injectors help , i have a roof rack & 31 inch tyres so that wont help, also how do you fit a turbo is it reliable & cost ?

No joke, it will do 80 odd on a nice LONG flat.

My IP was overhauled recently, the injectors have been setup to perfection and the timing was looked at very carefully, I guess all these things help. 18MPG seems really quite low.

Oh, and thats with mud terrains...

Turbo can be added quite easily, you just need the turbo manifold, and a turbo really. Got one ready to put in, was going to be a summer project but never got round to it. I have an army sump sitting in the garage which I will fit as its got 2 drain plugs, one I will turn into the oil return from the turbo.

IP = Injector pump.

The injectors go onto a machine which looks like a little one armed bandid, you screw the injectors into it, and its got a diesel tank in it and when you pull the lever diesel gets squirted out the injector.

You can see this process through a little window and there are guages and things to calibrate them, get a good diesel shop to do them for you.

does this apply to recon injectors or do i need them done as well ? thinking about recons cant afford to do both !

The 2.5N/A should remain just that You see what happened when Rover themselves added one. The extra power turned a reliable sluggard , into a nightmare of unreliability.,the 2.5 turbo diesel, adding a turbocharger to an unprepared engine is not a smart idea , Rover should have known better. The only redeeming fact was it forced them into replacing it with a good diesel The new diesel didnt use a seperate chamber to induce combustion,it injected fuel straight into the piston chamber. This new engine was the 200 Turbo Direct Injection. Shortend to tdi. Which is a great engine My son drives a 110 safari one with a Rocky Mountain overdrive Will do 90 plus all day on motorways. Driven about 55/60 mph will do 35 to gallon

Recon injectors I think should have been setup properly, its basicly just to get the spray pattern correct. In the 2.5 you want to get a good swirl in the combustion chamber. If diesel is injected with more of a squirt it will not work well, so the injectors can be set to do this.

I don't think it would cost a lot to get your original ones over hauled, its new needle and spring as far as I am aware.

Hi guys.

By way of introduction, I’ve just bought my first Land Rover, a 1986 Land Rover 90, with this 2.5 NA Diesel engine.

Ok, its kinda challenged by way of speed, but not as much of a compromise as the 1972 Series III that I also did a test drive in :)

However, without a tachometer, it is hard to guage shift points although these are getting better.

Anyone able to provide the gear ratios, and final drive ratios and what the rev limit is???

I am finding anything below 60 mph, needs 4th gear unless it is absolutely level (or downhill.)
Drop below 50, and really start looking for 3rd !!!

Did manage to record a speed of 73 mph on the GPS, although it did seem very reluctant to maintain that speed. :D
(interestingly though, the speedo seems pretty much spot on, calibrated against GPS.)

Also finding that double declutching is the only way to maintain rev’s high enough to cruise between 55-60mph.
Else revs drop, and by the time I’ve got down into 4th I really need 3rd.

Really need to try and predict what gear I am likely to need, before I need it.
Had a couple of nightmares where I’ve been losing speed faster than I can change gears, but getting a bit more used to it, so these are becoming less frequent.

Am I expecting too much? Driving this thing too hard?

Fuel consumption seems reasonable, I’d describe it as moderately thirsty.

Any help, advice greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Paul W.

PS.
I am hoping to use this for towing (under a tonne) on occasion and off-roading so can only imagine I’ll need to get even more precise with the gear changes.

On the flat I used to ignore 1st gear as it was to low, just started of in 2nd no problem, 5th gear would maintain 31 - 32 on the flat just !! It would cruise at 60 - 65 all day in 5th, mine managed to climb up to the top of the Shap summit without dropping below 55 but that was a calm day, any head winds reduce the speed dramatically. You must remember that this is a bored out 1950s engine and that you must read the road much farther ahead than modern motors. Mine returned 29.26mpg over a 1000 mile test in all conditions and roads. I loved it and wish I had never sold it !

Get an old Isuzu give it a shake and put the 2.8td in the 90, my 110 does an easy 75 on the motorway and gets over 30mpg. A lot cheaper than a tdi and bullet proof reliability, parts available anywhere. Sorry Landy fans but mines so good !
