Hey guys

The time has come to change my brake pads, while in there I'm going to do the disks Aswell

Where have you guys bought your pads and disks , did you go for branded like mintex, or non?

Mintex, Don, Textar and Pagid and several other perhaps less well-known brands are all part of the TMD Friction Group.

Big factory in Leverkusen makes them all down the same production line as far as I know.

The Pagid ones that are supplied as OE to M-Benz and BMW are on a separate line.

They also have a factory in Luxembourg which used to make brake linings for truck and trailer drum brakes.

Eurocarparts do the Pagid line and it's easy to get at least 25% discount using their 'Click & Collect' service online.

You don't get the same discount just walking into the store.

I've had green stuff pads on a smaller engined punto (1.2). They were fantastic but I can't imagine they would be enough to stop something as big with twice the power?

I may be wrong...

Anyway, EBC tend to get slated on any performance orientated car forums but I always found them half decent. I think there have been some bad batches or something. I wouldn't touch the EBC regular (black ones) again with a barge pole, they were sub standard. Usually go for OEM or something that is pretty decent.

I went to Leverkusen earlier this year for work…

Anyhoo, back on topic, I've got Mintex pads fitted on mine and so far I've been impressed. Especially, as it's an auto so the brakes get some stick.

Looking forward to fitting them!

When I first got my td4 I fitted Lucas TRW discs with Mintex pads, lasted very well but brakes always felt only just adequate. About three months ago I fitted these grooved & drilled discs with mintex pads. Freelander TD4 Front Drilled Grooved Brake Discs & Pads | eBay
I have definitely been very impressed with them, stopping distances are definitely shorter especially under harder braking, well worth fitting.

Not me, I hate doing brakes. Have fitted front discs/pads, let the MOT man do the pipes & fitted Quinton Hazell rear shoes with new springs etc. along with the usual clean & derust of the handbrake pivots & backing plate inside the drums (where the edge of the shoes contact) to cure the usual sticky handbrake. Needs done again but I don't use the handbrake overnight which has helped me put this job off for another few months.

Has anyone here done a complete overhaul of their braking system front and rear? "04 TD4

Thanks

Yup - but depends how much you mean by complete.

New discs, pads and a couple of pipes at the front.

New shoes, cylinders and a pipe at the rear.

Sticky pistons cleaned and refitted in both front calipers.

Had a sod of a job adjusting the Mintex linings so's not to 'grab' with the hand-brake. Eventually had to change them for Pagid linings

out of curiosity how hard is it to change the front discs please

as i need to change my pads soon and was also thinking of dropping a new set of discs on there while im at it but just wondered how hard the discs are to replace

thks guys and hope i wasnt being cheeky in dropping in on the post

gary

Not difficult at all Gary.

If you're going to change the pads then you will be half way there as there's only one additional bolt to remove to get the caliper completely off.

The disc itself is held on by 2 big screws.

Best to give all the bolts and screws a good squirt of penetrating oil and leave it a couple of hours.

Thanks for the replies gents -

Thinking i'm going to replace front discs/callipers and brake lines (leaving the master cylinder/vacuum servo and ABS well alone as that is all ok). Rear is same deal - new Drums/shoes and lines (hand brake cables are still in gc).

Anyone know of a kit for the front/rear - i have been looking at mintex and good ridge hoses but not to sure about the callipers yet. Any suggestions?

Cheers
