HI all

My disco 1 300tdi manual has what i would describe as quite a loud release bearing noise when on tickover and no clutch pressed, this goes once the clutch is pressed to the floor. Just wondered if the gearbox can cause this noise like a worn motion shaft or it is more than likely just the release bearing

Cheers All

If it was thrust bearing it would get worse when clutch pedal is pressed.
If you have no other noises when gears are selected then it's likely to be gearbox chatter, have you checked oil level??

Could be the plastic clips that hold the release bearing in place on the fork have snapped and its spinning when no pressure on the clutch.

I have similar , on mine its the release bearing chatters on tickover buggered if im dropping the box for a rattle , done it for two years im used to it:) fast idle it goes

sounds as said earlier like box chatter used to be very common till they modded clutch plates ,still occurs now with hd clutches and some worn ones

When the thrust bearing is on its way it sounds like any bearing when it’s breaking down, it grinds, it rumbles, particularly on the clutch thrust bearing when the pedal is depressed the bearing is released and therefore no noise, it only makes noise when it’s spinning.

pretty sure release bearing only makes a noise whe the clutch pedal is not pressed and goes quiet when pressed if its shot. Geabox oil is fine as ive recently changed it. Just wondered if gearboxes were known for the noise. Clutch is slipping anyway so its coming out either way so ill soon know if its the bearing i guess

If the clutch is correctly adjusted the thrust/release bearing is not in contact with the pressure/cover plate so it can't make any noise at all, when the clutch pedal is depressed a load is forced onto the thrust/release bearing and if it worn or faulty it will create noise.
Have I covered myself sufficiently enough for the pedantic few not to crib.

wrong release bearing is noisy when pressed,if only when pedal 1/2 pressed and quitens when fully depressed its spigot bush ,if its a rattle at tickover or gear change then it could be very loose/worn center of plate or box rattle which was common fault and caused by to litttle clutch damping
