Ok I have a 300 TDI 110 ute, really cant cope with the asthmatic performance anymore.

So 3 main options are:

1 - Fit a upgraded intercooler & turbo / fueling tweak. Obviously the cheapest option.. how much difference does it really make?

2 - Fit a TD5. I used to own a TD5 110 station wagon, loved it went well (was chipped). How easy is this? Expensive? Anybody done it before (cant find anything on it, i did a search)

3 - Fit an Isuzu 4bd1t . This is my favorite option but im guessing the most expensive. Would my r380 cope or would that need changing as well? Is this going to have more power / torque / driveability / better fuel consumption than a chipped TD5?

Thanks

Not What u want to hear, but I would stick with the TDi. I Just drove my TD5 back from Germany and felt sick with the MPG I was getting. I remember my old TDi getting nearly 500 miles on a run. This TD5 did only 420 miles wilh a full tank AND 2 x 20 LTR JERRY CANS!!!!!! I was wishing I had a TDi yesterday, believe me. I am now thinking of doing the TD5 to TDi conversion. After all mate, how fast do you need to go in a Landrover? If you want to go fast, buy a normal car. If you want to go anywhere, be happy chugging on in ur defender..

Try tweaking the pump for a start?i had a alisport conversion on a 300 disco a few years back and that flew, dont think the intercooler made much difference more the pump tweak. Td5 are not that much quicker!

I ran a 2.8 isuzu turbo diesel from a trooper in my old 90. It went like a rocket, really driveable and pretty good on fuel. Then the piston rings went so I replaced it with another isuzu engine. It was a beaten up old B reg truck cab, which someone bought from me for £3,000 - couldn't believe it! Damn I loved that truck

Wish i could get 500 miles to a tank.. i get at a push 600kms... (370 odd miles)

Yep i will tweak the fuelin & turbo boost as well, but im thinking il do it all at the same time as i fit the new intercooler.

i like your old ute there oli, looks like its done some hard work in its life!

The 380 will die very quickly behind the 4bdt and the clutch !!!
The perentie vehicles used the LT95 rangie box IIRC , but still had probs with the input shaft bearing . In the OZ mkt 110 diesel pre 300tdi they had the LT85 behind the Izuzu engine , so parts should be lying around for those in OZ , its a few years since I lived in WA , might be worth looking on AULRO HTSH

I had a300tdi 130 DCHCPU over there and that went quite well as standard so maybe your old engine is a bit past its best

Nah its been rebuilt only 30k km ago, brand new head and recon block... It actually isnt that bad but Iv gone from a chipped TD5 defer to a chipped Disco 3 to this... so it was always going to be sluggish in comparison.

the D3 literally flew! 0 - 100 in 8 or 9 seconds

id go izuzu if i were you, parts are lot more accessible for you there i would assume, which includes replacement parts should you break something, they are a lot more suitable engine than your other options i think. you should look into finding a scrapped rangerover or the likes as i have heard that the izuzu engine was a common transplant into them, this would make the transplant into a defender much easier for you :)

Would fitting a disco 300tdi gearbox / trannybox be better than having a defender 300tdi gearbox / trannybox as the gearing on the disco 300tdi is supose to be higher than a defender 300tdi :)
