I have seen them before but not many
Think they were special order, think the fire service/mountain rescue had most of them probably explain why its red

Wasn't that one on Fleabay recently?

I like most six wheeled Rangies, ever since I saw my first Carmichael fire tender.
Mind you some of them just look SO wrong. Usually the private re-builds or some of the abortions made for the Arab market.
 
Met a chap a few years ago who was building this as a tow vehicle

Full 6 wheel drive, Range Rover with Disco roof and Hicap rear end. It was powered by a Mazda SL35T, not sure if he ever finished it.

Nope. It'd in Beds. He sent me some pictures of installing the 3rd axle. He cut the back cover off the first diff case and bolted another stripped diff case on so the output pinion was driven off the crow wheel.

To prevent windup between the axles he used a Defender axle and installed freewheeling hubs.

He had as you can see put it on the back burner at that stage due to other commitments. Wonder if he ever finished it
 
Hmm that's what he said, maybe he swapped the diff around in the third axle. Not sure how he worked it out. As you can see the axles are close coupled so looks like flanges to flanges not a lot of room for any gearing. It was 7 years ago mind
 
That was it. The 3rd axle diff was put in upside down. Say looking from the rear the 2nd diff crown wheel is on the left of the pinion then the output to the rear is reversed. The 3rd did is then placed with the crown on the right hand side it works.

Just done a rudimentary sketch of rotations :D

it will work but only on short distance that's why its fitted with freewheelers it will wind up if left engaged for road use
 
Looks like the exhaust

Correct it is the exhaust well spotted. I met the guy as i am nearing the end of breaking a p38 and he wanted the interior from the breaker an i mean the whole interior, nothing seemed to fit right but he was a happy camper :) and seems to think the door cards will fettle on too :confused:.
The history as i understand is the rangie was a prototype made for the army and this was 1 of 3 made, 1 is supposed to be in the USA and this one in Ireland the third was scrapped last year. the log book shows car as MG (Morris Garage) and at that point my head was fried, but the proud owner paid just €500 a bargain
 
Its not often you see 1 but today I saw 3 and there for sale
They are ex mod with full history the one in the middle has 26000 miles genuine on it! All its ever done was run up and down the runway at raf church fenton (now closed) tax exempt and 12months mot
the one on the left is still under restoration 90% complete but would sell as is for the right price! offers around £7k each
apparently the pump gear works on them too
and the far one is his own build
