Hi, I'm looking for suggestions for companies that will do a complete rebuild/refit on my P38 4.6 V8.
I had a couple of quotes but neither company uses the top hat liner in the rebuild so I am looking for a company that will take my P38 and either rebuild my engine or fit a rebuilt engine (complete with top hat liners) and then send her back to me with some sort of warranty.
I am interested in hearing from anybody that's had this done, how you found it and recommendations for the best place to go (and anywhere to steer clear of).
I am in west Yorkshire so somewhere local would be good because any warranty will require them to carry out services but I am prepared to travel for the best rebuild.

Thanks Marcus

Turner engineering only supply rebuilt engines - you will need to find someone to fit it for you and send them your old unit.

Derek Allfrey Landrovers in Sussex offers a rebuild service which includes having your existing unit rebuilt with top hat liners, taking out and refitting, new camshaft, rings, etc etc.

There is a lot of work involved and he sends the block away to be done with ductile iron top hat liners and the crank to be re-ground.

This alone costs him about 1300 pounds so Derek's overall charge of £3500 is very reasonable -particularly as he is not VAT registered so there is no 20% additional charge at the end going to the government.

Once this has been done you don't have to worry about a warranty - your block will outlast you!

I know there is a company in Doncaster offering a similar service, but they charge about 5 grand plus VAT.

if you wanted Derek to do yours you would of course have to get your car to Sussex

My advice would be to try to find a secondhand engine and fit it and sell yours for rebuild.

Griffman,
is this Sussex Autogas Systems Ltd? this is the only reference to Derek Allfrey Landrovers in Sussex that I can find.
do you have a name for the Doncaster garage? I might give them a call and try a bit of haggling especially as they might be glad of the work now.

Wards engineering of rugby are excellent and do take the vehicle in if the space is available, competitive rates but not the cheapest - pal at v8 tuner gets his lingered blocks from Richard at wards - excellent - he did my top hat liners in my 5.0 90 (cover of land rover monthly feb) - taking big power no problem

i used turner engineering to supply the unit this was just under £3,000 a local engine fitter fitted the unit for me but i am currently selling my parents 1997 RR which would be a great donor see item 310659960686 (This is in North Yorkshire) this is drivable and may save you a lot.
regards

Yes, but David NOT 340 bhp before your NOS kicks in.

I recently re-read your feature - TVR were notorious fibbers about the power output of their engines - 275 is about the figure on most 500 engines - Austec Racing have had hundreds on the rolling road so they know the deal.

The most bhpI ever got out of one was 318 - and that included a John Eales 5.2 stroker block, stage 4 heads, upgraded injectors and a ridiculous camshaft, together with a a Tornado ECU and all the ACT nonsense on top.

Cost a lot of money for 33 bhp increase!

Your 500 with decent head work and the Edelbrock inlet and carb probably makes about 260 bhp and 320 lbs/ft of torque.

However - I have seen a solution to your manual gearbox problem - quaife now do a sequential manual that bolts straight into a RV8 with LT230 transfer box.

A snip at 9 grand plus VAT and installation!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes I realised that those numbers were "optermistic" (lies) but you have to be a bit poetic to make it sound better:) my mates were reading it ;-). Suprised though at the 318 figure. Andy Race (Tuscan series racer) had a 5.0 pushing 387 with quad webers and down draught - I know the plenum style intakes don't make near this, but it can be done. Anyway - for what it's worth recently rebuilt my engine to put 300 heads on, and the top hat liners were still perfect, so I recommend them.
P.s I go by Dave if that's ok, oly my father calles me David. Thanks

Sorry about that Dave.

The top hat liners do work - no doubt about it.

When the liner slipped on No5 cylinder on my friend Sandy's disco 2 he had a 4.6 Turner block put in - over 100000 miles later and still no problems - he is about to have a new camshaft and top-end clean and she should be good for another 100000 or so.

Andy Race's engine had solid lifters, stage 5 heads, 4 twin webers (as you say) and was so light internally that it revved to about 8500 rpm.

Not really a sensible proposition for road use!!!!!!!!

My engine was Andy race's spare! He's a nice guy- except he hadn't spotted it had slipped a liner (lol) his heads are the Eales 1.69 inlet cncs. Determined to make my 300s as good at half the cost:) that engine is gorgeous!! That is exactly what I want my next poject to like, really lovely- top guy who did that!
