Hello all,
need some advice. My 1996 disco 1 passed the MOT in December with minor advisory on brakes efficiency. Already discussed on here about handbrake efficiency and all seemed to be ok.
Now the problem, Changed rear pads and offside changed ok. When changing nearside had a problem fitting one pad, piston was reluctant to go back. Partly my fault as the pads were down to the bone,
As usual , meant to check before MOT but wet weather and age kept me putting the job off. Anyway, eventually got the job done sometime in January. Took the N/S rear wheel off for an up to date check to find the pad I had difficulty fitting is not working at all. piston is not moving.
here is my quandary. Do I fit a complete new caliper, or as one piston is working ok, do I just fit a new piston only.
Advice greatly appreciated.

I'd agree with new calipers normally .. BUT!

I bought a piston and seals kit, had a fettle and it's absolutely fine! Like yours, offside rear, only one piston corroded, the other perfect so an easy job. At the time I had lots of time available and no cash so easy choice .. (what changes!)

If you like messing about change the pistons, if you can afford it and don't want to mess too much, get the calipers .. :)

I renewed seals and pistons in a 98 Disco I and all worked fine .
But if I could get new calipers for the price mentioned I would go for that option again because it took a lot of time :(- and if one piston is badly jammed , even if you eventually free it the caliper might be damaged .
I live in Ireland and LR parts can be quite expensive here - that was why I chose the piston/seal option .

Island 4x4 do rear callipers for £27.50 plus vat

Ok they are britpart ones, had them on mine for a year now with no problems.
Island 4x4 are good they will tell you what parts are crap as they won't sell them as they don't want to deal with the returns.

Update.

have ordered new caliper from Paddocks at cost of £40.50+vat and postage.
Comes out at app £54. hate this rip off of vat etc.
only have one vehicle and don't really have the time to strip and rebuild with new seals and piston.
BUT, maybe yet strip old caliper and rebuild at leisure.
Thanks for the help and suggestions to all
