Hi, looking for some advice as I'm having a major issue with my 1997 Discovery 300 Tdi Auto (EDC).

When the vehicle is up to temp and warm it starts up in a cloud of white smoke!

I have done the head gasket, removed the egr, cleaned the intercooler and inlet manifold, fitted new valve stem seals, water pump, p gasket, oil and filter change, recent fuel filter, checked valve clearances, new timing belt kit fitted.

Any ideas as to what is causing this?

Thanks

My moneys on the turbo, only because thats what happened to me,spent a week arguing with a mate who said it was everything from a dodgy filter to the HG,I was rite in the end

It starts off the button and I have replaced the turbo with a good second hand one with no play in it. It definitely seems to be white smoke and when I give it a couple of revs it clears!!

there is not such a thing as white smoke imho either steam or blue tint too it ,turbos don't need to have play in them too let oil past the seal, are you using oil, did you have the head pressure tested ?

yes there is , obviously there is water but that disperses very quickly and there is unburnt fuel which hangs around and smells(causes are often poor compression poor timing poor injectors etc ),if its a cracked head or block ,head gasket etc it will show if nothing else with coolant loss ,any other symptoms

not really water would be steam not smoke the only truly white smoke comes from the Vatican but I am just being a pr@*k sorry

Get someone to start the car and stick your hand Infront of the exhaust. If its steam (white snoke/water moisture) then your hand should feel moist. If its bone dry then it's smoke and will probably smell of oil.

I have fitted a new timing belt kit using the proper locking pins.

My mate that i bought it off said he advanced the timing for it to start better but unsure how to put back to where it should be??

Could this be causing the white smoke when warm?

Robbie

unlikely if its slightly advanced a disel knock may be evident ,if you just want to check pump timing remove front inspection cover 3 x screw turn engine clock wise till pump slot is nearly aligned ,then move enginge carefully till flywheel pin engages slot ,try pin in pump if it wont go in as pulley is slightly past hole its too advanced ,not quite at hole too retarded, personally i want to check cam timing too
