Hi y'all

I have seen Buster's excellent "how to" for renewing the front seal and bearing on the transfer box, but I cannot find any reference or threads on doing the rear seal and bearing. I had a new front seal fitted by local garage in August 2010 but they have retired and the new garage owner aint to my liking.

Is there much difference between the two or does anyone happen to know if there is a thread on doing the rear seal/bearing?

I'm hoping to get into it this week as I am on holiday and mot is due next month and I need to see to a few brake pipes, probably a wheel bearing and the handbrake is u/s (oil on shoes I suspect.) So while I'm renewing the front seal and bearing, I'd like to renew the rear seal/bearing at the same time.

Thanks in advance,

Ron.

Thanks MHM ... I was concerned about the drive for the speedo I wasn't sure if it would be a problem or not.

I wanna strip all the brake drum down for cleaning anyway so job should be a good 'un then.

Cheers,

Ron.

I'm trying that already, but the difficulty I find is the various names people give to the same thing.

I've already tried looking through your posts but there are so many it will take my entire holiday to find the one I'm looking for. I'm hoping the advanced search will find it.

the best way to do rear is to remove speedo housing after first slackening drive flange nut if you dont possess an air gun etc, bearing is stc1130 seal ftc4939,prise speedo gear back once housings removed

Thanks James ... I have most of the bits but am missing one new nut and felt washers so they are on order but when I was browsing Microcat I saw the speedo linkage and was wondering about it.

BTW, did that CD-rom I sent you work out ok?

Ron.

Nephew has an air gun etc. and that's where I'll be doing the work.

i never bother with new nut ,yours should be as new anyhow ,silicone sealant is better than felt washer ,you dont have to remove housing put it easy enough and makes job easier and less likely to bugger up 300tdi on is only 4 x 15mm headed bolts for hand brake assembly and it will swing away with cable attached ,housing 13mm headed bolts plus 3 x 15mm,just needs siliconing back they dont use gaskets from 300 tdi on

Cheers James, sounds a doddle then.

I was really only concerned because everybody seems to talk about or have done the front seals/bearings but no-one seems to ever mention the rear ones (or, at least, not that I could find in all the searches I tried.)

Good good, will make a start on the routine filters and oil change, brake pipes and wheel bearings tomorrow and bits should arrive Tuesday for the transfer box so will do all the oils "down under" while I'm in there, maybe I'll finally get around to sorting the reverse light switch and diff lock warning light switch while I'm in that area.
