What are the 2 large holes in the rear bulkhead for?

Hi guys,

When swapping around Land Rover body panels from different ages you notice pretty much all mounting holes are left in place so that things like the old style door catches will fit on the pre-drilled holes on brand new tubs, below the new ones. That sort of thing.

But I can't figure out what the two large holes are for on the rear bulkhead, which are covered over with pressed ali panels, riveted down and smattered with sealant, like in the photo. They must have had a purpose at one point in time?

Ok I know it's a hi cap bulkhead but they all have it.

To prove a point, notice behind the black up-rights the row of rivets that would normally attached to the wheel arches of the tub are still there, not doing anything, just filled in with rivets.. they try to make panels as universal as possible, which can be handy!

I've heard them called inspection hatches before but what theyre for I've no idea

BMC cars used to have something similar to front and rear. It was for turning the car over on a pole during paint process.

They are to let the water out when it rains

My mate has removed the hatches and fitted speakers facing forward in the holes with a wooden backbox to protect the speakers from all the crap he keeps in the back of his 90. You can drop a sheet of ply straight down from the top of the bulkhead and it gives enough room at the bottom for the speakers. If you're lining out your tub anyhow it seems a sensible place to fit speakers.

could be for military use, ffr landies have the extra batteries behind the bulkhead. could be to feed cables through.

Doubt it, they all have them don't they? Mine certainly does

its a generic part

Just think yerself lucky they're filled in. Won't be long before they rust through. :behindsofa:
