I am new to Defenders but so far so good, However, I need a little reassurance because I'm getting rid of a perfectly good L200 for a 1995 Defender 90 300 Tdi!!! Reassurance is even more necessary because the Defender I bought sometimes makes a loud bang when moving off. Either in a straight line or turning and it's always associated with having reversed directly before.

I am sure it is to do with the transmission in some way shape or form. It is annoyingly intermittent and it only bangs once until the next time.

I did see a post on something very similar on this forum and it was suggested that it was chassis bushes (I think) but the 'fix' was never confirmed (I don't think). It's definitely something to do with the transmission and is definitely something to do with going into reverse beforehand.

Any ideas.... please !!
Thanks!

Best check through drivetrain and suspension and use process of elimination, so much can clunk/thud/bang on these.

Most common as said are UJs, halfshafts and drivemembers. Diffs and transfer box can develop play. Had LR fixed the mainshaft problem by now?

A frame balljoint maybe?

Good one to check, can make some loud noises. Also good to check most suspension bushes and the like.

Usually serious play in the drivetrain is also present when changing gear, so you may be lucky. :)

I've got a 95 300 Tdi CSW with R380 and no the mainshaft had worn in the input of the transfer box(LT230) (If thats what you are talking about then a big fat NO!

Just finished a rebuild of a 1995 defender. And now seriously considering selling my L200 now. Some teething troubles to sort out first though. Hope you get yours sorted soon.

Thanks all for the advice and comments! Will investigate and let you know what I find.
