3 Amigo brake light switch replacement Guide

Hi all.
I too had the same fault and after reading the above posts I bought a new switch and link lead. After fitting switch and lead no more tc and hdc amber light showing after bulb check, or so I thought. Twice while I have been driving at a steady 60 mph the following have illuminated and stayed on tc, abs, hdc and the red handbrake warning lights, the speedo, rev counter and temp gauges have all stopped working. Twice now I have stripped out and checked the new switch and lead to make sure they are connected correctly which they are but now I'm stumped. Any ideas what the problem could be guys?

tc hd lights come on now and then.. now brake lights stay on when ignition on what is the problem

I have the exact same thing happening to me George. I've changed the brake switch, ignition switch, it's been plugged in and didn't show any faults, earths look okay.


I'm looking to sell the car (2003 TD4) and need to get it sorted first!

Any luck getting yours fixed?

What I did in the end was to ditch the new brake light switch and link lead and replace with the old style one so far so good.

I got the 2 TC lights and no brake lights on my 06 TD4 commercial Freelander last week, i searched on forum then read through all the posts on the 3 amigo's then fitted a new £20 brake light switch and hey presto problem solved.
My mechanic was dubious about the fault being the switch but he still got me one.
Big thanks to the forum and original post on subject as i would'nt of had a clue otherwise.

Hello all, my first post! hope you can help MOT today!!!

I noticed a few weeks ago that when i press the brake pedal the dashboard lights (as in background lights) light up, as does the heater lights and glovebox light, they kind of stutter on and off. If i turn my lights on and press the brake pedal the brake lights flash on and of randomly until i pump the brakes a few times then it stops but the brake lights work fine after that.

Driving to work a week later and i get the three amigos.

Read though this and bought the right switch and cable to connect, i fitted it this morning but still have the three lights.

I read to check the cable underneath the gear lever gator. It has two wires going in to a white connector but out the other side there are two cables sticking out looking like they were snipped?? is that normal?

MOT in three hours..worth a long shot!!!

2000 freelander has 3 amigoes , plugged into my computer and both front sensors electrical failures, will check tomorrow ..

what should resistance be at the plugs ??

950 to 1100 ohm's according to rave.

It just depends on what year your car is, earlier models have a different brake light switch which has nothing to do with the 3 amigos
The 3 amigos could be 1 of a 1000 things

hi can someone please help i have the dreaded 3 Amigo lights on my 1999 freelander td and cant get them off changed switch paid 7 bux on ebay but still my lights remain on :attention:

The 3 Amigo's lit up my dash 2 weeks after having a new clutch fitted. My garage did a test with the diagnostics laptop and found the n/s speed sensor was at fault and would not clear. New speed sensor fitted fault code cleared and reset only for the o/s speed sensor to now show a fault which will not clear.

Any ideas?

Obviously LandRover like to produce challenging vehicles for challenging conditions.
Those with older vehicles will be pleased to learn that more recent vehicles such as my Freelander2 TD4 HSE (October 2009) incorporate similar false alert systems. I am advised it might be linked to use of cheap poor quality components and this should not be so with what is now quite an expensive vehicle.

As MOT tests will now fail a vehicle with false ABS alerts it may well be that this is a cunning plan by the Government to get more money from motorists and improve employment figures in the motor service industry.

Your wrong. If the ABS system has a fault then it has a fault. If it's a computer "blip" saying there's a fault when there isn't, which keeps returning when the ABS light error is cleared, then it is actually a fault somewhere. the ABS led is an advisory warning to the driver and not a money making scam.

Pick any car forum on the web and you'll see it's popular to remove or cover the ABS led when selling a car to hide a fault. The unsuspecting buyer may not notice which is the sellers intension.


It's not a cunning plan by the government or any other motoring agency/company to extract money from people by inflicting pain at the MOT station by ensuring vehicles are safe to drive on the road. In the UK the MOT is a safety check which all vehicles should be able to pass, to be on the road. Sadly many seeing the MOT as an inconvenience once a year. They maintain their vehicle to "get it through the MOT" once a year as opposed to keeping it roadworthy all year round. Hence repairs wait until MOT time.

ABS lights have been checked for many years. It's not new. Look in your local UK MOT station and you'll see a chart telling you what each version of car does, when first switched on. There's more than 1 system for the Freelander 1 and it openly tells the station what to expect. Lights coming on, flashing, go off after so many seconds or at certain speeds. It's part of a yearly safety check which many wouldn't bother with if it were optional. Hence why it's mandatory in the UK. Can you imagine how dangerous it would be if the yearly MOT moved to every 2 years if peeps wait until the next MOT to do repairs...

Thanks for thread and pics. I think I 've got the same problems but have even with pics no clue where the throttle pot is??? I had a quick look in the engine compartment but couldn't find nothing

Getting old maybe that's why I couldn't recon it properly on your pic :crutch:. If you want to add my one let me know.

Got TC and Hill Decent on most of the time (ABS has flickered up couple of times) along with high temperature (when the engine is cold!) and fuel gauge is flickering. Same switch as per ?

Hoping to pick up my Freelander from garage where I bought it on Tuesday and that has TC & HD light on would fitting a new switch to a 1998 1.8XEi solve the problem or is it just a fix for the 2000 onward models?
