Taking the FL in for a full service next week, cam belts, fluids 'n all.

So I'm taking bets on which bits will be missing when I get it back this time :D
if there was bits missing last time why would you put your fl back to a garage that are clearly not capable of doing a proper job

Well they're allegedly going to put back all the missing bits.
And this way, if something is wrong afterwards, they have no come-back as it can only be their fault!

I actually really trust the guy who owns the garage (I'm told he'll be doing most of the work), I just think some of the rednecks he employs are slightly dubious.

Well I dropped it off last night as planned.
Got a call from them today saying the rear bank is leaking oil and they strongly recommend new head gaskets.
Oh well no Easter eggs this year then!

Why do they suggest new HG'S? They don't need doing unless they have failed!! Where is the oil leaking from? I doubt it's the HG more likely the cam cover gasket which is an easy job ;)
Does it loose water? If not then the HG'S are fine ;) The KV6 is'nt known for spontaneously popping HG'S like the 4 pot and doesn't need them as a matter of course!!

All very true.
However, they are pretty much taking it to bits anyway to replace the cam belts.
At least this way nothing is missed, and the HGs were suspect anyway, although there is no significant coolant loss and no oil in the coolant.
Maybe they can check the rings and liners at the same time? Just a thought.
Plus I could use some new carpets... ;)

Anyway I'll let you know how it goes...

Doing the HG's is much much more work than doing the cam belts!! Belts are a 4 hour job with the engine in the car. The heads are best done with the engine out as the access rear head is minimal so runs a risk of causing damage to the liners. The engine will have no piston or liner wear if it's been serviced on time. The KV6 engine is good for 200,000 + miles before a rebuild is necessary. Don't forget in an MGR car the oil change is at 15,000miles but LR say 9,000 or something so it's always going to be well lubed. If it were my money I'd hold off on the HG's until they have been proved to have failed ;)

Not asking for advice here, just having a rant.

Well, as stupid as I feel to admit it, the car isn't back yet.

I went in last Tuesday to have a moan about it (and the fact that the courtesy car they gave me made knocking noises going round corners) and they said it would be definitely done by Easter (no comment about the courtesy car!).

So Thursday evening I went in to check.
The guy who put it back together failed to connect all the electrical connectors before refitting the inlet manifold etc, and couldn't get them to reach to where they are supposed to go afterwards (basically what they were saying was they didn't know how to put it back together properly). He had called in sick that day and so the car wasn't ready, so the embarrassed garage owner promised me faithfully it would be on my drive Tuesday (today).

So today (Tuesday) I headed off at 5:45 am as normal with the courtesy car, as I turned into the main road the offside CV joint collapsed. I got the AA to relay it to the garage but on reflection I think I should have left it where it was. I phoned when they opened and they said they'd get me another car. None arrived.

And you can probably guess the rest. I don't have my car or any other car.
I'm self employed and currently out of pocket by around £1500, due to lost time, (without the bill!) and I might even lose a very important customer.

Luckily I have a Scotch collection, which may get smaller tonight...

Unbelievable, absolute **** take!!!sounds like your being a bit to reasonable,I would be going off it.these garages are getting worse its getting harder to find mechanics you can trust these days.anyway hope you get it sorted.

I know it's no consolation but you can hire a car for less than £100 a week, it might be an additional cost but might mean you can work and not lose customers.

You are having a rough time with the garage :( was this the same garage that missed half the parts last time? If so I'd not use them again and I'd think twice before paying the bill tbh. A KV6 is an engine of mid 90's design so is'nt particularly complex to work on. Good luck with it ;)

Took it for a short run yesterday.
When I got back it was running rough and hot, and the MIL was lit.
My OBD2 scanner said codes P0306 (cylinder 6 misfire - that's a new one!) and P1319 (Misfire detected at low fuel level - even though it stall has half a tank).

Bearing in mind they changed the head gaskets (their suggestion) because they thought it could cure the running hot and misfiring problem.

Took off engine cover. The cam-cover pipe which was missing before and which I bought a new one so they could fit it while the manifold was off - was still missing.

Also when I asked, they said they hadn't changed the diff, IRD and gearbox oils like I had asked them to do.

So basically they took over a month to do nothing I asked them to do, just what they wanted.

It's going back Monday. I'm going to speak with the local LR indy as well and get their opinion; apparently they know this local garage and can't believe they would do anything wrong.

I don't friggin know. Bit tired of this **** really.
