Hiya!
A motorcyclist recently decided to fall off his bike and let it smack my Freelander. Very light damage but as the airbag deployed, it got written off as a Cat C.
The insurance company let me have it for £80 which was a no brainer, but obviously now I have to get shot of it.
Do you guys have any advice on the best way? I guess it's between just phoning the scrappy or putting it on ebay and seeing if anyone buys the whole thing for a few spares.
Ideally, I'd scrap it but sell the wheels afterwards, but I don't think that's doable.

Is there much demand for entire 'parts' cars, or do I just phone the man to take it away?
Romsey - Hants area
Thanks for any advice!

As DD3 said fix it mate,
or if you really want shot try the we buy any car lot,
they will give you as little as possible for it and it will be gone..

Personally I would keep it or strip it out and sell the parts..

Sounds like it's reparible. Is there a reason you would want to scrap it ????

Cat A - The Car should be scrapped and no parts can be taken from it.

Cat B - The Car should be scrapped but certain parts can be taken from it.

Cat C&D - These are normally used for non economical repairs. I.E Not dangerous to drive but the insurance company doesn't want to shell out repairing them.

Fix it and carry on!

I did consider it but can't for a few reasons - mostly money.
I had to buy a different car (Volvo) in the meantime which ate the payout (£675 excess had to come off before that- ouch) so not much to do it up.

The other reason is that my insurance company won't reinsure it, and so trying to get it mended and insured with someone else whilst I have a claim in progress is a real pain.

Would keep it to strip out a few parts but I guess the key is trying to find a balance between making a bit back and having a car sat there in bits.

Last option is to maybe ebay it for spares for a week, then scrap what's left - this looks to now be the best option.

Two more questions then, if I may. Do you get anymore for the car when selling it to a dedicated LR breaker over a normal scrappy, or does it make no real difference?
Finally, are there any bits I should definitely take off and sell on their own (already got the towbar off)?

Shame about that, possibly a good car going to the scrappies. There are a couple of members on here who break freelanders, where about are you based, if your close to one of them they may give you a shout.

Edit: I should take more time to read posts. You did say where you are in first post...................I'll get my coat

Stick it on ebay as spares or repairs as a complete car!! That way it's gone, you get a few quid more than you paid and it might get put back on the road!!

I break them but I am to far away to purchase. I would stick it on ebay and see what happens and if it doesn't sell you should get around £200 from the scrap yard.

The problem with breaking cars yourself is that you sell a bit here.....a bit there.....a few bits there.....it takes time and can often be a load of faff, plus ebay fees and postage can eat into any money you make. Then you are left with an unsightly, undriveable 3/4 complete car that you still need to try and get rid of, and since all the good bits have already gone, nobody really wants the rest of the hulk.

IMO fix and repair using second hand parts, get a VIC check done and get it back on the road. If your insurers wont cover it, then screw them and get it insured elsewhere, or just sell it on straight away once repaired.
Failing that, get it advertised here, ebay, gumtree etc and sell it as a whole car.

Scrapping it.....depends what you mean by "scrap" - a breakers that dismantle cars and resell the parts will pay out, but probably not much. A metal recycler who will crush it and turn it into girders for a chinese skyscraper will pay out by weight. You will need to phone around both types in your area to see who offers you the best price, and dont forget to ask about them collecting it and any charges they will make to do so if you can not deliver it to them yourself.

is it petrol or diesel ? either way ebay as spares or repair thye go for quite good money , plenty of pics so they can see exactly whats wrong. Breaking yourself can be a real pain , and hardly worth it with a petrol version JMHO

if it wasn't your fault, you shouldn't have to suffer the excess, this can be reclaimed from the motorcyclists insurers.

also, bit late now, but you can insist on your vehicle being repaired if the accident is not your fault. very long and arduous process, but there is a bit on here about it.

either way, get your excess back, it wasn't your fault so you shouldn't suffer, not to mention incidental out of pocket expenses.

Thanks for all the advice.
I'm trying to get the excess back, looks like being a long process though.
The car is a 5 door 2001 TD4, 132000 miles. It's been a fantastic car, been in the family for about 8 years just for me to have a prang 6 months after getting it!

The insurance is a real pain. It's a specialist 4x4 policy and even though they refuse to reinsure it, they also refuse to cancel the policy and give me a refund until the claim is fully settled. Essentially, I have to keep paying to insure a car I'll never be able to drive
Lancaster Insurance, underwritten by GroupAma - avoid.

I'll phone around for some scrap quotes today - the poor old car is sat on my parents drive along with my Dolomite so I'm sure they're keen to see it go!

Pic is a bit naff but aside from the silver surround thing that you can see broken, it needs a new rad and more than likely some of the air con system replaced.
I'll let you know what I get for her!
Thanks again for help and advice.
