Evening all,

Got of problem with the old 2 1/4 diesel.

Ran loverly last saturday, did 80 miles at 50mph. Then come monday morning, took a while of cranking to start as though it wasnt getting enough fuel and then when i went to go to work, got up into 3rd gear and noticed a lack of accelertation, then up into 4th and none at all.

Took it home, put some fresh fuel in ( tank already had 20 litres in it ) and it ran better but still no acceleration.

Changed all the filters but its still bad, i've no idea what it could be now!

Any one have any suggestions?

thanks
mat

Before doing any thing with injector pump[expensive]check fuel line is clear and that the lift pump is working, also check air cleaner is clean and its pipe is not collapsing in on its self.

Check air cleaner and pipe, all fine. Lift pump appears to be fine and i think the fuel lines are clear.

Its smoking abit black on acceleration, could the problem be that the injector pump timing is out?

If you mean the air flap on the air intake then yes it appears to be opening fine.

I can have my foot on the floor and its revings its nuts off while stationary, but it wont do it whilst driving.

Make sure the stop cable is not out a little bit, I've had this problem, a return spring helps..:)

If its black on acceleration its not lack of fuel , sound more like a timing issue , either pump or cam , brakes not binding ?

They all do that Sir. Try running it with the air cleaner hose removed to see if it is collapsing under vacuum pressure, this will eliminate that as a fault.

I ran it with the air cleaner hose removed, no real different.

It look an age of cracking to start, then it has plenty of acceleration when stationary and up to 3rd gear, but once in 4th gear it doesnt have any real acceleration.

Can get up to 35mph at most.

Engine is louder then usually, but no knocking.

You could do a compression test and see what each pot is doing or do a quick check by cracking each injector in turn, engine should run a bit rough on each opening, if it stays the same then something is up with that cylinder.[do not let high pressure diesel squirt on your skin, diesel dermititis is no fun]
