Has he followed the correct self-bleeding procedure - same as when you fit a new fuel-pump or fuel-filter?

Or did he just put in some fuel and then crank the thing non-stop in the hope it would start?

What year of TD4? - early ones have 2 pumps.

Possibly running it dry has sucked a whole load of cr*p into the filter and choked it - or f*cked the pump.

Which fuse has blown?

i would guess they ave just put fuel in and tried starting it.its an 02/02,dont know which fuse has blown

Most likely he has 2 pumps - one in the tank and the other on the RH corner of the engine-bay near the bulkhead.

Turn the key to get the ignition lights on - but do NOT try to start it - you should hear the pumps running and than shut down after a minute or two. You may hear gurgling fuel noises, but not to worry.

You need to repeat this procedure 4 or 5 times before even trying to start. Even then it may stall - if so then repeat the key without starting bit a few more times. Eventually it will start and perhaps run rough for a minute or two.

This is pretty standard procedure for an electric self-bleeding pump these days. Mechanical pumps need a completely different approach.

If we knew which fuse it would help as it might be affecting the pumps.

tomorrow is another day.i will tell him what to do.
thanks guys
would the cranking make the EML come on

rang him today and they are putting a fuel pump on.at £129 i thik it must be the in tank one.

When I changed the fuelfilter on my 2001 Td4, many moons ago, I was not aware of any facts re bleeding and so as I always ran petrols before, so after changing I just started up the car and it worked ok from the start. Guess I've been more than lucky that day ??:D:D:D
