Defender 90 as Campervan

the seats are still in they're just folded forward, the furthest slat is screwed to three legs, also taken from the futon, which supports the far end.

The whole lot is "tied" together using two lengths of seatbelt webbing nailed down, then pulled tight and secured at either end with two lengths of thin rope to stop it moving as much as possible.

Will try and take some more photos tomorrow when it gets light

Well the conversion was moving apace and the inside of POPPY was gradually becoming resplendent in a glossy silver coat when the lights sort of went out or rather the landrover turned upside down all on it's own - well thats the way it seemed. Yep you guessed the glue got to me, there I was a pre Christmas morning finishing off the covering insulation of the inside of the landrover. It was a rather cold morning so I had a small fan heater adding to the fug inside the back of the landy but the window was well open as I had read the label on the can - it said 'can cause drowsiness' yeah sure but only to wallies who actually sniff the stuff. It won't bother me with window open - the rest is a warning - said landrover started spinning, I threw open back door and sat down to recover - fortunately unharmed but a wee bit wiser.

Suffice to say the interior is finished as far as insulation and relaying floor carpet. Next stage is wall and ceiling carpeting and seats. If I get this right the pics should be below. No more work till after New Year and I will be more than cautious next time I take to the glue vapours. :doh:

Careful with those glue odors, I use to have friend who built racing yachts. He use to say after a day of fiber glassing down in the hull it would only take one beer and he would be off his face.
 
I am just about to convert a 90 i built for my daughter into a camper , but its a non starter without extending into front seating area AFAIC , sideways etc in a landy is OK for a few hours kip on a long drive but after that it really grates FME . I have converted a few over the years, so have a reasonable idea of what works when used for extended periods . I will be using a concertina set up that hinges at bulkhead level on passenger side . Set up involves folding passenger seat to dash, extend bunk short section thru 180deg to front , pull bunk main section down from side wall stowage position (hinged at top end between panels) to layflat on top of bulhead partition , and finish by extending front section on panel nearest sidewall thru 180deg over front passenger seat. The rear r/h corner is supported by using a seatbelt strap to clip into socket bolted to inside top of rear door . Flat panels made from ply with lots of 2 inch holes drilled to lighten and prevent condensation under sleeping materials (eg mattress / bag etc Hope that makes sense as I dont have pic of similar setup i used in 109 panelvan back in 70.s When folded you can sit with back to that side to operate cooker etc mounted on drivers side with top at bulkhead level .

Have you considered a slide out rear floor that you pull out, then attach a tent to the rear ?

This is my cunning plan at some point. Open rear door, slide out floor section, bit like a prop up table in a camper, then have a bespoke canvas to cover the gap around the open rear door. Good for the odd night me thinks.
 
Me and the missus have driven round europe twice now sleeping in the 90, as said on here drop the seats forward, cut down the bulkhead to level with them (half bulkhead removal fit some sort of removable bracing bar across the dog guard fittings ( I used the dog guard and laid it flat over the front seats when sleeping), cut down or make a lowered cubby box board out the rear attach astec tent or similar bobs your uncle. Got some phots somewhere.

Having said that we took a tent last year cos it hardly seemed worth it in decent weather . needless to say it ****ed down all three weeks.
 
I've just joined this site in the hope of finding the topic of camper conversions on here so am pleased to see ones been started. I'm based n Cornwall and was wondering whether anyone had a 110 that has been converted to sleep in that I could come and have a look at and get a better idea of how to convert?...or London as am there a lot too.

I'm basically full of questions as my first car at 18 was a Series IIa and I miss the days of driving around in it. Having gone 'several' years driving a more economical car around I've decided its time I went back to my roots and got a Land Rover again (this time a 110) but anything I ever knew has been forgotten, so things like insulation, getting more MPG, converting to sleep in are all at the top of my 'but how?' list and would love to have the advice of someone who knows but I learn better by seeing. Any ideas? Thanks!
 
Welcome - you're going to get abused for not introducing yourself.....

Check the search engine for the forum as there are plenty of campervan type threads.
 
UPDATE
Hope to get some new photos up especially if we have some snow, beyond that POPPY2 is fully insulated on the inside but thats as far as we have gone with the campervan.
New GG AT2 tyres, intercooler, shocks etc, etc, etc (£1k gulp) but she sailed through MOT.
Campervan idea on back burner as thanks to KGB and GROUPON its now just as easy to drive anywhere and stay in comfort.
I must be getting old but I still would not swop my landy for a rolls royce.
... and heck what else can I spend my pension on.
