Hi,

Range Rover P38 2000 year 2.5d auto HSE:

Last couple of drives noticed an intermittent ABS fault being displayed, the car has been parked up for a few days and then today when I came to drive it, it failed to start (looked like flat battery), battery was at 4v ish, so jumped it to another car and the problems just got worse!!!!

Lots of error messages coming up / will try to turn over but fail to start.

See this video I have uploaded of the messages displayed when trying ....

Land Rover Range Rover P38 - Electrical problems? from Flat Battery - YouTube

My guess is an earth fault somewhere or sync issue????

Any help / ideas / guides etc would be well welcomed, need the car for the little one ..........................................

Cheers

Paul

The window not set and sunroof not set messages are due to the voltage having gone so low. the fact that everything goes off when you try to start suggests that the battery voltage is too low even with a jump start.

I would charge the battery properly or replace it and try again. Setting the windows and sunroof is a simple process and has to be done every time the battery gets disconected or goes flat.

If you are desperate to get it started, i would leave the jump leads connected wit the dponor vehicle running for about 20 mins before trying to start it.

And yes check the leads for any loose connections - and at bothe ends - not just at the battery. I found a loose connection at the body end of the negative lead on mine which was causing a lot of my problems.

My guess is you battery is knackered and is preventing the voltage reaching a high enough level to operate the ECU's. Messages are normal when the volts are low.
Battery megastore, alphaline MC31 135 AH 1000CCA biggest that will fit, about £100 delivered. Cures all sorts of problems. If the battery regularly drains, check the RF receiver.

Hi

Cheers for the instant quick reply!!! I might be missing something but the donor car engine running and leads jumped to the Range, on start up am I not already utilising 1 - whats left of the Range battery 2 - the battery of the donor car 3 - the alternator of the donor car??

To be honest, from the video etc I would have said myself a flat battery or an earthing issue. Maybe my belief in the points 1 to 3 above are where I am going wrong!!!

I did get (before I took video) faults coming up after failed start ups of traction fault / neutral %^*&^ and others hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Is it correct that since the Engine warning light goes out that it then IS NOT a sync issue?

Cheers

Paul

If the battery is dead, it may never allow the voltage to reach 12 volts, so although the car may turn over, if the ECU's are not happy with the voltage, nothing much will happen.
All those faults are normal with low volts.
Jumping modern cars can be very destructive.
Either charge your battery until it shows 12.8 volts or if it never gets there replace it.
Keep playing and if it hasn't already lost sync, it soon will have

Interesting, it only seems to turn over three times before stopping, however then i can turn the key and it turns over another three times, Im hoping it is the battery as that would be an easy fix, the first bit of frost and the battery gets flat ...............

Anyone know what amps are drawn to start these 2.5d motors?

Cheers Paul

Why?
Everything that you have said points to one thing - your battery is knackered.
If you keep pratting about you run the very real risk of knackering the electronics. If you want an idea of what I mean find a thread on here titled 'cheesed off - in need of help'.

+1 why do people not listen there is a wealth of knowledge on here and we all know what happens if you fart about with a knackered battery for a hundred quid just at the beginning of winter a new battery is a no brainer

Yep, Diesels are well known for it. They need the best battery you can afford.
The battery has to work hard on these diesels to start them, & when they're weakening a cold night will kill it.
Listen to Dogsbody & change your battery.

New battery ordered, appreciate everyone's help and advice, hopefully will update once new 135ah batt is in place and all is ok!!!

Cheers again,

Paul

just fitted 1 to my RR after a completely dead battery. took the advice of Datatek and ordered 1. put it on and no more problems!

very spoilt cars when it comes to voltage. you should have the later RF receiver fitted, if not get 1.
any probs after fitting the new battery with loss of sync, give Mozz a shout. hes a wizard at these things. if you can, get a donor battery and put the jump leads on the terminals so you keep power in the system as you remove yours. i failed to do that but i got lucky. put the leads on the undo the terminals. (advice from Mozz).

you wont go wrong if ordered from battery megastore, you should have it today.
