I would of thought that would show up on the diagnostics ? next time I take it out i might time it and see if it is 3 minutes. Its starting to get complicated now

maybe i have a different way to see things but for me it doesnt look to be "behind the starter" .... anyway if your engine stops after 3 minutes IMO you have to investigate the CKP sensor circuit to the ECU...and dont forget that:

The CKP sensor can fail the following ways or supply incorrect signal:
l Sensor assembly loose.
l Incorrect spacer fitted.
l Sensor open circuit.
l Sensor short circuit.
l Incorrect fitting and integrity of the sensor.
l Water ingress.

put a new air bleed valve on and new filter and it ran for 4 miles before cutting out I have spoken to the local specialist and he thinks it is the pump so i am going to order one

I am following this thread with interest as changed my 99 td5 3 weeks ago for 2003 model with 74000 mls.
So far have changed filter and air valve, Injector washers and seals whilst top was off thought just as well do Injector harness so replaced that.
Running a lot nicer when it runs but cuts out after a couple of miles have ordered a new pump today, beginning to wish I had re welded old faithfull which never missed a beat in 4 years.

Check crank sensor and wiring as mentioned. If you're manual there should be a shim under the sensor, or you'll get a noisey crank signal fault. Auto no shim.

Faulty main relay can cause it to cut out.

The Injector seals may have been botched, a bad washer or nicked o ring. Keep a close eye on oil level. Any sign of it rising, don't drive it and re do seals and washers.

You should only be purging if your pump sounds like a strangled cat. Then I would defo suspect injector seals and washers.

Excess cranking could be causing the smoke, as ecu throws extra diesel in after cranking for ten seconds.

Check out below fault find flow charts. They may help.

I have checked the wiring and the spacing of the ckp and have fitted new relay and filter. The pump gets louder and louder until it just gives up.Thanks everyone for all the help I will keep you posted

"The pump gets louder and louder until it just gives up"

I really suspect you need to do your injector washers and seals again. Sounds like your getting air in fuel from compression ie copper washers. Re do them yourself following the below link:

www.discovery2.co.uk / TD5 Engine - Injector Seal Replacement

I'd do this sooner rather than later and before you fit the pump. It will only cost you £30 using genuine parts and might save you the price of the pump. Take your time and be anal about cleanliness. You can lift the injectors out using a long allen key with the short end ground to a point. Smear a little vaseline on the rubber seals and the injectors will slip in easy and avoid pinching the seals. Torque everything twice as the injectors will settle on the soft copper washers.

I think it is finally sorted i have replaced the injector seals and washers and it seems to have done the trick.Thankyou everyone for your help.
