I had to replace my PNH000020 Intercooler to Manifold hose today, as it had a large split in it,
I have a 2003 Td4 and I have come across something strange,,

I have this engine without the bling and as it seems without the sensor???

I took this off today to replace the hose, standing by was my son with a hacksaw to cut the new pipe to make a space for the small pipe with sensor,, when we saw these parts..

I believe the sensor is an Intake temperature sensor, obviously for the air, I would like to know if its missing or not supposed to be there as I am not entirely sure,
what will be the consequences of not having one??
and is it an easy part to refit if needed??

I take it I would need a new sensor and pipework (mind you I could cut the plumbers pipe I have to install it)
My concern is the other end, a if it was fitted at one point I cant see any wires hanging around..

I will be looking for it harder when I do the EGR replacement at the weekend, does anyone have a picture of where the other end should be coming from??

Why would someone remove it in the first place???

Thanks in advance for your help and guidance..

Its a 2003 Td4 mate, was it later than that???

if it just had the pipe originally why would someone go to the trouble of cutting it and
fitting the plumbers pipework in there..??

Not to worry mate - your car doesnt have the sensor there at all. :)

Earlier TD4s had the temp sensor in the MAF housing, so only 2 hoses:
1. from the intercooler to the ducting
2. the 90 degree one from the ducting into the EGR

Later TD4s - from MY 2004 have the 3 hoses (as in the pic you posted) with the air temp sensor on the top long hose. As that position is after the turbo, it's a bit more accurate.

What you've removed looks to me to be a cheapskate's bodge. :(

Singvogel.

This one is the same as mine,,,

Looks like they just moved the sensor and left everything else the same??

Glad I don't have to find the wires and refit it though,,:D

Thank you guys..;)

be calm, my 2003 td4 is the same as yours. had the devils own job with LR spares dept insisting on giving me the wrong hose when I knew I didn't have the sensor.

in the end, the guy came out and looked under my bonnet !

Oh, and don't forget to cut a bit off the old pipe to wrap round and protect the new pipe where is rubs on the cover mounting screw:

Fantastic idea mate,,,;)

I will sort that out soon,,:)

The wife drove it tonight to work and reported it has never driven better,,
Mind you we only got it about 3 weeks ago,
but with the bit of EGR & crankcase cleaning and then this pipe change its like a new motor,,
never going to be a race car but much more sprightly off the line and to about 50-60Mph

Waiting for the Cyclone and the EGR bypass to arrive,
along with the other filter items and then she should be in much better health than when we purchased her,
not that I thought anything was wrong,,I thought all diesels were slow, but I know it wasn't running right now....

Soon be able to move onto the next thing...:D
