Hi

First off, i do not know much about the mechanical side of cars in general.

I own a 53 reg land rover freelander.

I was driving earlier and all of a sudden a huge sound rattled the car. It sounded like ringing and banging. I looked under the car and in the middle of the car where was a huge what looked like bolt hanging down which has come loose.

Is it something to do with the prop/drive shaft balancer?

I was lucky i only lived close by so drove it home. Obviously I cant get anyone to see if now as it is saturday night.

Was hoping someone could shed some light on this and give me an idea of the cost of fixing to save me the shock of when I take it to be repaired!!

TY

vcu mounting brackets, these have bearings in them. There is one in front of the vcu and another behind it.

get it sorted before driving again or it'll cause major problems.

Hi there! Thanks for the responses.

Its like on the picture that 'Freelaner' posted. The left part of the bracket is loose.

Any ideas on cost? I would say id take it to my local garage or halfords autocentre.

Thanks

hiya, where are you in the country? i would suggest speaking to bell engineering, they are the gurus of freelander transmissions;), well respected on this site, they have vcu bearings at a good price, £30 a pair, reason i ask where you are is bell are in the nottingham area, good luck, martyn:)

Whilst its the VCU damper that has failed and you can pick one up for £40 ish, its only about a hour to do.
The only thing is has the VCU ever been changed, if not, it could be false economy to just change the damper as both the VCU and bearings could be getting to end of life and potential damage to IRD will be very costly.
Like a previous post said, Austin at Bell Engineering can supply a refurbished VCU and bearings. Last time I priced one it was around £250 delivered.
If you are close they only charge £300 fitted all in.

Hi there. Firstly, I'm in Chester so Nottm is far enough away.

Regarding if the vcu has ever been changed, I have no idea. Nothing to suggest that it has.

Thanks for your replies. Very helpful

yep that'd be the cause of your rattle.

take it off and refit the vcu, you might not even notice the difference.

if you do find there are vibrations present buy a replacement.

Many do remove the damper and run with out it on, not had first hand experience of doing it so not sure of any issues with doing it. If you go down the route of removing then just angle grind it off, a lot easier then stripping down. It will allow you to drive around whilst you decide on what to do with it.
