Max possible freelander ride height thread.

The maximum lift you can put on a freeby is 2 inches. Apparently if you go any more than this you'll need to start doing more hefty modifications. It's not just a case of adding springs as well as spacers unfortunately.

Obviously you can have more from the tyres as the tyres add onto the radius from the center of the hub, but where you're limited is the fast you can only push the independent suspension so far.

Max suspension lift is 2" even then you run into clearance problems with your steering arms, tyres are limited by the spring seat and steering lock! I think mine are about the max, the modulars do have more offset. It screws up your camber on all four wheels, you need camber adjusting bolts too.

surely the higher the lift the more stress on CV joints aswell?

Edit: not counting tyres

i seem to remember a thread recently were it said that any more than a 2" lift could cause problems with the angle of the uj's on the props' :scratching_chin:

Props don't move! Driveshaft cvs only. Mine have all faired ok! But on full droop the rear spider joints bind! So that is the limit before something breaks:(

Hi guys. There's a lot of talk about lift on here with some threads dating back to 2010

I cannot find any basic straightforward answer to this - so please please be kind.

Some people say it makes it bow legged and need camber correction pins. Some say the correction pins are not needed and can cause a failure.
My questions are :-
1. How easy to fit - I have never taken suspension struts or anything near it apart before (done brakes/air intake/standard service stuff). So I don't know if you undo the 3 bolts off at the top what happens - do springs open and force everything apart? Will it all drop to bits round me? I'm always a bit nervous of doing a job for first time as I don't know what to expect.
2. Camber correction pins needed or wanted? Where do they fit? How easy? (as above - never taken bits apart on suspension so big unknown to me) Only 40mm lift to try to avoid too much cutting - but some pictures on here do show "bow leg"
Cheers for comments and sorry to ask basic stuff. I have searched for this but posts seem to end with no real answer.

Basically what i've gleamed, from the evidence submitted, is that it varies from vehicle to vehicle, i know that's not much use.

Undo anti roll bar from strut. Undo track rod end and split joint. Undo 2 big bolts thru bottom. Release brake hose and abs cable. Undo 3 bolts at top. Strut comes out as one piece, do NOT undo the big central nut at the top as this releases the spring. Fit your spacers to the top of the strut and refit. Rear is essentially the same, but less complex.

I fitted camber correction pins as my handling was awful and yes it was a bit bow legged! When you remove the two big bolts at the bottom of the strut the camber bolt replaces the top one of the two! 4 required they come in pairs. Then get full 4 wheel alignment and tell them the camber needs doing as they'll assume it's fixed as it left the factory!!!I've had no issues from the lift! 2" bearmach. Cvs ok etc. you have to adjust the inner wings with the 2" lift to clear steering arms

Remember it's steering and suspension so it's all critical to your health to get it right;)

I'm still abit stuck. lol

Should I get 205-80-16. Without 2" lift kit. Or will I still get speedo problems with or without the lift kit. As I have been reading other forums on landy and it looks like its a split topic. ?!?

Thank you Diesel Do for your helpful guide to the lift. I chickened out in the end and got my mechanic to help me (well do it for me while I watched with a knackered back) glad aswell as some bolts were seized and I would not have got them.
I'll put some pics on in a bit as I think it looks a lot better. You said use 4 camber correction pins. I've got 2 fitted to front only and the camber is still wrong on the front and back. So I'll let it settle for a few days and have another go. But not sure the fronts will come back as they one is about +1.5 with the pin fitted.
Evans garage http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f9/freelander-lift-kit-54490-7.html mentioned a modification to the front hub was needed - but didn't post any more information:(
Put on some 225/75/16 grabber AT2 aswell. No wheel spacers. The tyres are close to the lower spring cup - I cannot push my finger through the gap, but it shouldn't move so I think it will be ok. Full lock slightly scrapes on the plastic on the trailing edge of the tyre - but not a lot, so again I think it will be ok.

Ref camber, some apparently need top and bottom bolts doing to get enough adjustment! I'm still thinking of extending my arms to compensate?!
