grinding noise from rear

Hi guys,

I have a grinding noise coming from the rear of the hippo thats been getting worse over the last couple of weeks.. If you switch the engine off and coast down a hill in neutral, it starts about 5mph and stays through all speed ranges.. There is no difference if the engine is running or accelerating through the gears the noise remains

Af first i thought it was one of my rear wheel bearings, cos when i get to about 60mph, i get a definite wheel bearing "drone"..

But now im worried its something else like my diff on its way out.

The hippo passed its MOT last sat, i did ask the guy who done it to check, but when i picked it up hed gone on holiday.. but did say my DIFF mounts needed replacing.. But the bearings were checked during the MOT and it passed?

The only other symptom i have is a knocking coming from the rear left wheel arch on full lock at about 5 - 10 mph.

Any ideas guys?

Any tests i can do to narrow this problem down?

The grinding is so loud now that i struggle to hear people talking in the back!!:(
 
I havent had the drums off no, but on Saturday i had a load of work done on the back brakes - as follows on reciept:-

Brake shoes - £31
Brake cylinders x2 - £22
Hand brake cables x2 - £46
O/S/R brake pipe - £6

The noise is exactly the same as before it went into the garage - its been there for over a month now if i think about it..

So i guess after the work it cant be the back brakes?

Where do i go next?
 
Vcu bearings? Knock possible cv joint? Wheel bearings hard to test on a 4x4 like the freebie cos you can't spin the rims to listen!!
 
Sounds like the outer CV joint on the rear left.

I currently have a bearing noise, only mine still has the noise after IRD and Diff rebuilt, VCU bearings changed and all four wheel bearings changed.

Just recently I can hear a knocking at low speed and on cornering. The noise seems to be from the rear right.

I assume that the out CV is knacked. They are no longer available from the stealers, its like 350+vat for the complete rear drive shaft.
 
I had a knock from the rear that I couldn't pin point until it turned into a grinding noise that woul start at 20 - 30mph.
Mine turned out to be the off side diff drive shaft carrier bearing, when they go the oil seal will normally start to weep indicating which side has the problem.

No - havent jacked up the back myself as i only have a standard freelander jack, and i have an old trolleyjack which wont lift the freelander off the ground as its not rated to lift the truck up :mad:

I also have a very narrow driveway with cotswold stone chippings all over it, so not really any space to do it if my trolley jack did work

I thought the noise may be the rear wheel bearing as when i get to 65ish i get a definite drone from one side.. but no uneven tyre wear. As people have said though, i cant spin the wheels anyway due to the VCU and 4wd system

Took it back to the garage that did the work today and he told me that he thinks the noise is being created by the diff as my mounts are knackered (which he told me last sat and quoted me £100 to replace and fit)

The landy had a brand new VCU and all bearings replaced for new 38k miles ago.

Is the diff oil easily accessable to check/drain/top up?
 
Quite simple to do, take diff off and replace carrier bearings.
Costs about £30ish for 2 new bearings, 2 drive shaft seals, 2 new hub nuts and some new diff oil.
Takes about 3 to 4 hours if you've stripped the rear down before and you have the tools......I think I have a write up on how to do it somewhere.

After reading all peoples advice on here, im guessing its either my VCU support bearings (which were only changed 35k ago) or driveshaft bearings..


I think the best place to start is to remove my prop and see if the noise goes.. The only problem with that is i have very limited tools, no space and no way of getting the car in the air.. So i guess ill have to find a garage to do it for me... Wonder what thatll cost :(

Before you go ordering parts and worrying about how much it might cost :

Crawl under on yer back with a torch and grab a hold of the props near the support bearings .
You will get a few degrees of turn and be able to move the prop up and down and side to side .Check for perished rubber on the bearings .

And go find some concrete blocks and bits of wood ;) .
