I have a Synergy 2 fitted to my td4. It was already in the car when I bought it. My problem is that the last couple of days when the MAF compensator switch is on I'm getting hesitation and flat spots under acceleration. Also the car idles very rough till warmed up with some smoke on start up.

When I switch the MAF off it runs perfectly apart from the rough idle.

It seems to have the fuel pressure sensor bypass fitted and has a Bosch MAF still and the Synergy on number 5. The car has covered 140,000 miles.

Just wondering why it runs worse with the Synergy switched on and do I have a possible injector problem?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

This hesitation is exactly what I would expect with a Bosch MAF and MAF switch on.

If you still have a Bosch MAF the MAF section of the Synergy must be switched 'off'.

The 'on' position is only for when a Pierburg MAF is fitted.

Setting 5 is the maximum setting as 1 to 5 is for the Bosch and 6 to10 for the Pierburg.

Try cutting it back a little to position 4 - that should reduce the smoke - assuming you are not using supermarket diesel which encourages smoke anyway.

The rough idle may have nothing to do with the Synergy.

How long since the air-filter, pcv and turbo solenoid vent filter were changed?

For a Synergy to work at it's best, especially when set to maximum, everything else must be spot-on.

Singvogel.

Thanks for the reply. I changed the pcv and air filter but not sure where the solenoid vent filter is?

It only smokes on startup and doesn't seem to smoke when warm.

I didn't even know what the Synergy was about until I noticed it after I got the car home and did some research. The MAF switch was on when I got the cat so I was worried about fiddling with it.

the Maf compensator is for both Bosch and Pierberg mafs it's just not required if a Bosch maf is still within spec.

turning off the maf compensation is basically reducing the requested fuel quantity so suspect the synergy is highlighting underlying issues, most likely injectors....

re: the bosch maf with the synergy box ..

In the paper work that came with it it say to try it and see

same here .. my bosch maf worked fine with the maf switch 'on'

have since been trying out the pierburg maf .. mainly out of curiosity ..
i.e after reading rover rons results ..
( see 'FOOTNOTE: 27-1-06 SOME MAF TESTS'
( bottom of page : .. Maf sensor problems.

i'd check all the connections for possible corrosion ..
plus check the other bits as mentioned
.. air-filter, pcv and turbo solenoid vent filter ..
and ..

.. maybe the fitted maf has finaly had it's day .. burnt out .. or needs a clean .. or ..

Thanks for all the advice and help. I have now replaced or cleaned all filters, connections etc. The car is running without hesitation now but I'm still getting very shaky idle and loads of smoke on startup. When the engine warms up it all but disappears and I have no loss of power at all. Tried some injection cleaner and while it is alot smoother with the additive in the tank it goes back to normal when I refill with standard diesel.

Is this most likely a faulty injector or injectors?

Thanks.

Could be a problem with the synergy box....mine started playing up due to a build up of crap on the back of the board. I stopped using it in the end with the intention of sending it back to be checked and reflashed .......but Ron said he didn't have the software for mine anymore but would take it as a part exchange against the latest version.......an offer I will probably take up in the near future.

Have tried with the Synergy taken out to no avail. Will do a leak test and see.

Is that a big problem? I have mine floating about near the battery and wondering if I need to put it into a dry protective box for winter to stop any condensation getting inside.

Try running it with the maf disconnected and the maf compensator switched off on the synergy. This will make the engine run on default values and prove if the maf is knackered.
